I have several fonts designed but I want to make them multilingual. What characters should I use for that purpose? I would really appreciate it if you could answer me.
@DanielNisbet13 күн бұрын
On the main screen in Glyphs, there's a Languages panel that you can use to generate the glyphs you need. It's organized by writing system and under each, the languages that use it. Right-click (or Control+click) on the language(s) you want to support and Glyphs will show you all of the characters it needs!

Hey Daniel, love your videos. I was curious: Are there any existing resources on the "completion" of a typeface. For instance, if I wanted to upload a font to be downloaded by others, what are all the things it would need in order to be considered complete? I know much of it is expanding across many other kinds of non-standard characters, but I struggle to fully grasp when you can actually opt to stop designing and actually release a functional typeface. Thanks!
@DanielNisbetАй бұрын
Thanks so much for the kind comments! As it pertains to what is considered "complete"-it seems to be a pretty fluid term. In the Type West program I took, we used the Adobe Latin 1 (adobe-type-tools.github.io/adobe-latin-charsets/adobe-latin-1.html) character set as the barometer, as it can support a number of different languages. I've adopted that as my goal for fonts since (and that will likely be the case for this one). Other foundries and marketplaces may have different requirements but usually they include that along with any other submission guidelines. Come to think of it, this might be a good video idea for the future, too 🤔

hi love your videos! It would be helpful if you made a video about your plugins / workspace setup. I often see in your videos various measuring tools and element colouring systems that's not in my glyphs setup. I imagine you use them for a reason and would be interesting to hear your insights. Also any scripts or quality of life shortcuts that help you design more efficiently would be interesting! Thanks:)

Truth be told, I'm not watching this series to learn how to use Glyphs or make a typeface. Rather I am watching to better understand what and how decisions are made when designing a typeface. I think this will ultimately help me in my own graphic design projects. So I am viewing this like a lecture and so far, I've been really enjoying it. thank you so much!

Hi Daniel great tutorials! I just want to ask about the plugin you are using to have a foreground color the paths you are drawing? it makes visual drawing easier then clear foreground color.

Hey Daniel! I'm a graphic designer and I want to explore the fontmaking process, but I don't know where to even start, apart from just googling a lot and hope to stumble across something useful. Can you recommend anything at all? Books, websites, forums, etc.? Just having that roadmap would be great. I don't have a Mac so I guess something like FontLab could be used instead of Glyphs, right?
@DanielNisbet4 ай бұрын
Hey! I'd say typedesignresources.com/ is probably the best website/repository of resources I've found. It links to everything from books to software, etc. As far as software, I've heard Windows folks gravitate towards FontLab, so that's probably a great place to start. FontForge is a free option as well if cost is a factor, but I think the ease of use requires more of a learning curve.

This is a fun typeface! Very Art Deco indeed. I have say I liked your original letter Q the best (with the small descender). The later version with the thin strikethrough line looks a bit fussy and kind of breaks from the overall design language of the face. That said, I think you NAILED the K and Y.
@DanielNisbet7 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I'm still not 1000% sold on the Q in its current state. I may go back to the descender or even just include it as an alternate.

Loving this series! It'd be great to hear even more about curves, harmonization, and such - some of us came to fonting via literary and linguistic backgrounds, rather than art.

I loved your original 3, the final version is far too generic and I just can't love it. I wish you had kept your original 3. I like the original 2 a little bit better also but that needed some tweaking but the final 2 is also not very original. Maybe the final versions work with the final font, but I just do not love them. The final font does look great tho, especially love the lower case g.
@stevenwilson5556 Жыл бұрын
Before you moved to the bold weight you should have done the accents and the bare lower case i and j which would allow you to do nearly every single accented character for very little extra work, you'd only have to move the anchor points on some of the letters which you could fiddle with later. So just doing the double dot ¨and the forward and backward accent ´`and the ˆhat, and a couple others. The program can auto-generate most accents from that

One thing you haven't mentioned so far in the series, since it seems like you have designed Sans Serif type faces before is if you are going slower because you are explaining things or if you go the same speed when you are not making a video?
@stevenwilson5556 Жыл бұрын
One thing I don't know if you were aware at the time of this video but you can set the side bearings based on certain letters, like lower or upper case O can be the side baring for e or C or G, and you can set it per side just like you can by using numbers.
