Nope definitely not. There's a lot more. but this was a pretty consistent routine as someone working in a lab that does cell culture.

I am hopeful that my life's journey takes me towards this career path. But i must ask, with repects to my first step; my associates degree. Is Public Health ok to start with or which program would you recommend?
@worldwildmed5 ай бұрын
sorry can you clarify? are you asking if it's okay to get an associates degree in public health? regardless, it doesn't really matter what you get your degree in as long as you find it interesting, you succeed at it (e.g. get good grades), and check off the premed requirements. In other words you can major in public health, sociology, film, etc. as long as you take your bio/chem/physicics/math courses as well.

Thanks for posting this video! Helped me with deciding if I should use benchling. For your differentiation experiments, do you have a protocol that you import every time for your replicate experiments that you check off as you go through the actual work?
@worldwildmed6 ай бұрын
yes exactly. I have a template and everytiem I set up a new batch, I import it in. It's a 10 day schedule, so I can set the start date. From that point on, I know exactly what I need to do on each day and can check it off accordingly. Does that help?

@worldwildmed8 ай бұрын
that's awesome! What made you decide to start a PhD? Advice wise... I can only compare it to first two years of medical school and what I hear from my peers in clinic but it's definitely very different. A lot more independent thinking and flexibility in terms of workstyle/creative control, which I really enjoy. Some of the earlier courses for us had plenty of differential equations so be sure to review that if it's been a while!

@@worldwildmed I realized that I needed engineering skills to combine with my biomedical skills to find solutions to intractable health challenges. I will likely focus on Tissue/immunoengineering or immunomodulation.

I realize that I did not emphasize that the money you get from a fellowship can obviously help pay for research materials that will help you complete the research that you need to do. I was trying to emphasize that it doesn't really increase your own stipend or personal benefits, but I feel like I undersold the benefits that it provides to your own research on the lab . Just wanted to clarify that in case it wasn't clear.

how did you study for your MCAT along with doing a cs degree. And also isn't having a high gpa challenging as a cs student and also leaves with you less time to do extracuriculars. I also want to get my undergrad in cs and hopefully get into med school but if not I can still do my masters in cs and get a good job.
@worldwildmed9 ай бұрын
Hey great questions and I think you're right about the GPA issue. I did a BA at the University of Rochester instead of a BS which allowed me to be more flexible with my course selection and I was able to avoid some of the big GPA killers.. You can still do ECs it just depends on your specific situations.

I’ve seen your videos throughout the years and applaud you. Keep up all that you do. I have lived in the DMV for the past 6 years and have been wrestling with wether I should drop my stable career in cs/systems engineering as well as comfortable lifestyle to pursue an md/phd for years now. It eats at me from time to time and videos like yours don’t help (in a good way). Specifically biomedical engineering. I’ve had this burning passion since childhood to join biomedical research to assist the disabled community. I always thought this path was the dream and ideal path. Not sure if I’ll regret it or avoiding a headache. Keep it up man. Very happy and proud for you

At what age did you start your MD/PhD journey? I am currently 25, and I would love to do an MD/PhD in the future, but I have some obligations to fulfill and the soonest I can start unfortunately is at 31 years old. Do you have any advice on applying as an older MD/PhD candidate? Also, nice squat form; Clarence Kennedy would be proud!
@worldwildmed Жыл бұрын
I started at age 24 and am now 30 with 3 years left. I know people who started much later in late 20s or in their 30s. as far as advice, i think from what ive seen, older candidates tend to have diverse and interesting background and it's best to showcase those elements of yourself. in other words, it's not a flaw and don't think of it as time away from school and things that would make you a good candidate but rather recognize it as time spent maturing and exploring elements in life (such as hobbies, work, etc) that programs can appreciate.

@worldwildmed9 ай бұрын
I applied all over the country. Do you mean the computational aspect or my actual research focus, which is the blood-brain barrier? Other programs with similar research that I can think of (in the BBB/drug delivery space) would be U wisconsin, U Minnesota, U Florida, Rutgers. Also some of the big name schools (UPenn/MIT). Does that help?

Please, could you tell me if your degree was Computer Science BS or BA? To double major such different requirements, I am wondering if you chose the BA route instead of BS? I know both are great paths and a great number of industries couldn’t care less for which one a candidate has if they are well versed with full-ended knowledge, but I’ve seen a lot of posts about STEM industries prefering a BS for their positions. My son was accepted in direct admit Engineering CS BS programs, but as he is in the pre-med track also (including BSMD offers), those programs are encouraging him to change his degree to CS BA because “it would be nearly impossible to finish all requirements in 4 years”. This thinking was not his plan and I was wondering if you could share more information about your path here. Thanks in advance!
@worldwildmed Жыл бұрын
Hi sorry for the late response. I think BA is probably better if it gives you more flexibility. I've worked contract gigs and received recruiting offers based off my degree. No one cares if its a BA or BS as long as you can work done from what I've seen. I don't think anyone will really care about the BA/BS if you have a portfolio or resume that shows you can get it done. and then obviously for medical school, it's better to have the flexibility when possible to avoid GPA killers or balance schedule with easier classes when possible. Hope that helps. just my two cents.
