Wonderful video. The time lapse and narration really help to demonstrate your painting method. As always, thank you for sharing. How long does it usually take you to complete such a portrait. Well, actually, this was TWO portraits.

Thanks, Fred! I had about 10-15 hours of video footage on this one, after the sketch. So probably it took me close to that amount of time.

KZbin recommended your testimony to me this morning. I guess it’s because I have been watching lots of painting tutorials and faith related videos too recently :) I was deeply touched by your transparency and boldness in the testimony and moved to tears several times when I heard how God pursued you and blessed you tremendously through miracles again and again. I am a Christian coming from China(living in USA currently),and I got saved in a tiny underground family church in my own darkness, a couple of months after my divorce. That’s about 20 years ago. God is so good and so merciful. I don’t leave comments often on KZbin, but I have to this time :-) Thanks for sharing your story as part of HIS big story, thanks for showing me a way to share Gospel through your passion in art. I picked up my brush again this year as a beginner, I think God is using your testimony to encourage and inspire me. Very grateful. I pray that God will continue to use your channel to help artists to grow and also lead more people to THE LIGHT. 🙏🙏🙏

It seems like I paint for 10 or 15 minutes then I mix another color, paint for 10 minutes and I'm done . How long are your painting sessions?

I used to paint for hours. Sometimes 10 hours in a session, just stopping long enough to get a bite to eat. But now that I’m teaching there are a lot of other tasks to do. So now it’s just an hour or two here and there. Sometimes a 3-4 hours.

I think content creators should have full control over what ads are shown during their videos. It does upset me that there could be ads for products that don’t align with my values. Being sponsored is one way, or like you say they can buy a class from you. That’s perfect. And I’m glad that there’s no ads with you. It’s refreshing. I see too many ads and it really is making me want to not even stick around to watch videos. Thanks for your insight. I’m not monetized yet. I do watch one artist who has a PayPal account and I’ve sent him money before. I guess that is like patreon. All of this is great to discuss and think about. May God continue to bless you. 🙏🏻❤️

I agree! It would be nice to have that kind of control but until YT changes that, it will be ads off for me. No worries. No bad feelings. Yes you can! It is a matter of applying the warm color at the juncture of a light and dark value, especially when the lighting is strong.

Really enjoyed the video Matt. Would love to see a pet portrait tutorial. Q? At the 1:06 min mark, you say "I'm going in with a pretty dark glaze here to fill in the interior of the dog.." what percentage of paint to matte medium did you use for that pretty dark glaze?

Hi Susan! The glaze would’ve been made up with raw umber dark, ultramarine, blue, and alizarin crimson. Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment. :)

These are good exercises. I think if you go back into it, you should adjust the shapes of the shadows between the eyes. You have such a great face for portraiture. Maybe your wife could take a more relaxed smiling portrait of you which would better portray your wonderful positive personality.

Thanks. I appreciate that! Yes, my normal face just by the construction of my features, doesn’t look very happy. So I always try to smile. But I’m actually pretty happy most of the time, so it comes out naturally!

@@fineartbymattphilleo Joy comes from the Lord and it is a great testimony to others. A month ago, I ran into a fellow artist who was in college art classes with me. He said that he always thought I was such a positive person. I shared with him that I was a Christian. We talked a long time and then parted ways. I learned that he suddenly passed away just four days after we spoke together.

What kind of colored pencil do you use,I just had a drawing smear

I use Prismacolor. Standard color pencil. If you use the kind that is meant to mix with watercolor it will smear, big-time! Also, even with Prismacolor, it’s good to do a pre-deal spray of 50/50 matte medium and water (let dry) before brush applying.

You could do that. Will you be painting the people a different color (like white/ gesso) over the background? Otherwise I think you would have issues with the background color affecting the skin tones.

Thank you Matt for the class! I'm going to start a new painting tomorrow using this technique. Do you have brief notes on each stage or step? For instance, if I remember correctly the canvas is prepared with 1 cup gesso and a "few squirts"of matte medium. Then to "reseal the image, equal parts of matte medium and water." If you can refer me to bullet point notes that would be fantastic and appreciated. I don't want to forget a step. :)

Hi Matt. I'd like to try your technique in an upcoming painting. It seems slow, but your results are beautiful. I can draw and paint fairly good, but always struggling with hard edges with acrylics. I'm also going to try open acrylics to do a grisaille before the actual painting with glazing.
