I thought this show was about DV and the the person in the music was saying Be Glad that I'm not God. Which to me is powerful statement. If you look at the platform it kind of looks like a cross and those flags kind of resemble the stained glass windows in churches.

Actually got to see them at Drums Along The Rockies earlier in the season. Loved them! They took 2nd at that show behind Madison Scouts. That show improved so much up to finals! This show was their 2nd DCI Championship title at the time.
@seanicusthirty7666
@seanicusthirty7666 4 күн бұрын
You mentioned them looking small. DCI rules back then allowed 128 members (including drum majors) total. It was enough to fill 3 tour busses. Then each corps decided the numbers of brass, percussion, and color guard to get to that total. I'm not sure what year in the future but it was changed to 135 at one point, then more but there is a limit to how many are allowed.
@seanicusthirty7666
@seanicusthirty7666 4 күн бұрын
The reason why the sound quality was so bad was because Tom Blair (the person that usually recorded the shows) didn't do it this year, and I believe 1996. DCI used IBM to do the audio / video recordings. Their microphone placements were horrible, and they lacked the experience with it. It didn't help that there was a cement wall bouncing the sound back creating a terrible sound environment for recording. It affected everything including high frequencies, and that beautiful triplet roll that Blue Devil's snare line played in their show that year during Day Danse. 😭😭😭 I would give anything to hear this show as it was intended again. I got to see it at Drums Along The Rockies earlier in the season and they were on fire there! They won that show. At DCI finals, they placed 4th.

This show was Magical Mystery Tour #3 (10 place finish). Show #1 was done in 1987 (with their highest placement which was 7th, tied with Star of Indiana). Show #2 was done in 1988 (8th place). Before the beginning of the show, they had 2 members out there with flashlights that were supposedly directing a plane on the field (not sure if they were the drum majors). The corps started the show by singing, "We love to fly, and it shows," the advertising slogan introduced by Delta Airlines in 1989. When they played the Magical Mystery Tour opening, you saw the color guard do the tosses of flags over the brass, but one of them threw a blow up doll dressed as one of the judges (on-field judges usually wore green golf shirts and black trousers). Then they segued into the song called Brazil that finished with the tag from the song Tequila. Then the corps went to Japan with their drum feature called Koto Thunder (I believe written by the late and great Tom Float who was their percussion caption head). Then they went to the Soviet Union / Russia. The ballad was from Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas Music. First part they were in a gulag work camp, the picture is of Vladimir Lenin. You saw when the workers made the hammer and sickle like the flag, then they smacked the pic with the hammer. Then the fall of the Soviet Union and they celebrate playing Trepek from the Nutcracker and the hints of Russian flags. The last part of the show, they went to Hungary. They played Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2. You saw the part with the bear, the hunter about to shoot it, the he is distracted by the Valkyrie Brunhilde. Then there was the part of the eight guard members kneeling. They were about to do the Bottle Dance but of course didn't finish because you saw the NOT! sign. In case you weren't aware, Santa Clara Vanguard's show that same year was based on "The Fiddler On The Roof" which the Bottle Dance is from. I think they were trolling Vanguard a little. 😁 You saw a cameo of the Wicked Witch Of The West from Wizard Of Oz on a bicycle real quick. Then the short silence and the high pitched scream from the Valkyrie (or fat lady), then you couldn't see it in the video but there was a sign that said, "It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings!" The last part was added this finals night with the shark. It brought the house down! One of my friends that marched in this show (Bass Drum #2) told me that the crowd went totally nuts when the shark came out and ate the fat lady! I could be wrong about this, but if you are familiar with the Velvet Knights, references to the shark, JAWS, the shark fin became part of the corps' lore when they switched to their comedy style. Back in the day, they used to do a skit before the show with a member running from a shark fin. I miss the old lawn chairs the drum majors would use at retreat. 😁

I thought this was a show about a ghost constantly reliving the moments before her death. Also regretting the choices she made that lead to her death. Like taking the train that day. I'm assuming that numbers is time that has past as she waited, laying there in the rumble of the wreck making the transition.

VK was one of those corps who didn't take themselves too seriously. Also, they always had a show that was fun and entertaining to watch. This was the era of no electronics, no trombones, either the guard or corps created the visual or GE effect, and the horns only had to 2 valves. This was my hay day of marching and A LOT of corps had good shows that season.

I am also a guard member from this show. This show is inspired by Burning Man. The first piece was about coming together (at Burning Man, lots of people built up a city of sorts in the Black Rock Desert). The next three pieces represent some principles of Burning Man. The sun prop represents self-reliance, the butterfly is self-expression, and the band props are self-inclusion. After that, the ballad (What Was I Made For) was about making connections with other people (we called it cozy campfire). The last piece represented the parties, fun, and celebrations at Burning Man. The overall show was to celebrate individuality (hence the "you" of YOUtopia)

hi :) i was a guard member and the butterfly in this show. our show announcement stated ‘join us on a journey through the eye of Burning Man’. this is some more info about the show, paraphrased from a DCI article. this show is based on the burning man festival which takes place within a desert (hence the props and uniforms at the beginning)- and is a celebration of art, music and self-expression. as part of the festival, people create art installations. our props represent these, and the music corresponds with them (1 - sun, 2- butterfly, 3- brass band). burning man usually ends with a big festival - for everyone to join together and celebrate :) i hope this makes sense. we were open class champions and 19th in world class. the only other open class corps you’ve reacted to is gold! open class is more accessible for younger participants (mainly high school age) and typically involves beginning move ins around a month after the world class corps for reference :) i hope this helps you when you rewatch :)

The wind sometimes makes it a little more difficult to play but it was a lot windier during prelims. The wind wasn’t as bad during finals. We did have people quit band middle of the season so there were holes but I’m really proud of our win. This year too!

Ayala HS’ 2018 show is about how change is “inevitable” where they convey that theme through the change of the seasons. Different sections of the show represent the changes in season (the opener representing the fall, the ballad representing the transition between fall and winter, and the closer representing winter and its transition to spring). In the show, they have elements like music that related to their respective season (them using an excerpt Carol of the Bells in the winter section), change in props (the back props going from orange to blue to green) and vocals that indicate the change of seasons in the show (“hello winter,” “goodbye fall,” etc). I definitely understand not getting the theme at first with some of the design choices of the show that threw you off about what the theme could be, though. I feel like it’s one of those shows that you understand more the more you rewatch it. Inevitable is personally my favorite show from Ayala as someone who currently marches there so thank you for honest reaction to the show!

My favorite show of this year. Execution-wise I think they should've been placed right where they were (maybe 2nd). Concept-wise, my favorite of the season! Funny because most of people's criticism of this show had to do with the concept of the show. I truly believe that this show will only be appreciated by the drum corps community a couple of years from now when people start to understand all that was happening to accomplish "Romanticism" (and yes, there was a lot, maybe too much for some, hence their 3rd place?). Music-wise, it's the one I'm looking forward to the most when they release the official recordings.

1:27:00 A celebration of artists that left us at such a young age. The music of Felix Mendelssohn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jeff Buckley.. But more to it.. just celebrating young ones that have been lost at such a young age.. and this production was taken deeply because the program lost someone at a young age and this production was a tribute

As someone who marched in this show, I want to correct you about the program losing someone and this showing being a tribute. That member was in the show and ending up passing later that school year. But the show concept is on point. I think the show had a wonderful concept but doing it right after Cinders (which i was also in) where the story told itself, it is hard for an audience to understand what is going on during the performance.

to add on the narrator is a monolog regarding coping with death. I understand the confusion watching it as I also had a hard time as a student understanding because I was young and naïve with not experiencing the loss of someone. But rewatching this as I am older it makes a lot more sense. The music selections are from artists who passed at a young ages and the prop art is Basquait (his art can been seen on one of the Strokes albumbs) the lighting in the video does not do it justice
