She said charm, intelligence, and then good ankles. Why not ? I think only women deprived of the three would take offence. BTW I am a woman 😂😂

My mom introduced this movie to me as a teenager and I have loved it ever since. She passed 10 years ago. I had been looking for this movie for years and finally found a couple of years ago. I think of her every time I watch it! ❤

Some white people think slavery was a fairy tale. So sad how some don’t want to face the truth of history. I can appreciate an old movie, it comes with the true treatment of blacks as portrayed here. Sad …but it’s American history and truth as painful as it is.

Frances Dee was never a hugely famous actor but she made a lot of movies that have depth and substance like The Silver Cord, Happy Land, Of Human Bondage, Becky Sharpe, If I had a Million, etc. This is another fantastic part of her resume. What a great movie. The entire cast and direction are superb. Fox studios wasn't MGM but their movies were fresh and unvarnished in ways that make them still extremely moving today.

Saxon should have been an actor, not a producer. That way he could have channeled all his wild energy into his roles. Like Kinski. lol

I just googled Maureen O'Hara only to find her described as a "staunch conservative" who voted ONLY for a Republican president. She's also reported to have been a close friend of John Wayne, a known and self-confessed racist! This dampened my enthusiasm for the actress whose movies I always enjoyed. Yeah. Bigots and narrow-minded people aren't my cup of tea. All the same great acting by all principle characters.

Another excellent film, with lots of good laughs, not cheap ones. Except for that ending, though ... breaking the third wall felt like a bit of a cheat for me. Otherwise, really enjoyed this. Thanks!!!

I'm in the process of reading Vera Caspary's autobiography and I have just gotten to the part where she mentioned this movie and that it opened to positive reviews. It didn't come to anything for her at this point (during the Depression). She also wrote of not liking murder mysteries that were formulaic. This certainly wasn't. By the time she'd written this she'd also written several books and a play (play didn't do well). There are elements of this movie that come out in her books (gossiping, mostly)
