Yes, it is needed and I particularly set the Neutral profile + Lens distortion correction as the default profile when loading raw files.

As I expected, the DCP profile created by the Calibration software from my own ColorChecker shot is giving me a DE00 of 18.85 which is not very good IMHO. Using my workflow I can get that down to < DE00 2, which should be enough for any reproduction work, or a pretty good starting point for any colour grading, and it would give the same results whatever the camera that was used. For general photography, your workflow, may be sufficient for most people however. A quick note, a DE00 of 1 is considered as a just noticeable difference.

Very interesting, I keep tinkering with Rawtherapee but I can't work out how to get a pleasing photo with the minimum amount of mouse clicks.
@NaturalProfile7 ай бұрын
Greetings. It can take some time due to every photo being so different (exposure, light the angle of light, composition etc). In the video the custom profile that was created the tone curve was a gentle curve to start from so I could make adjustments to the shadows and highlight to get the contrast in the image that was pleasing to me for the final result. I don't have a simple answer because editing is personal what someone wants there final photo to look like and what looks pleasing them. Maybe if you create a few different profiles with different tone curves to start with or even the auto match tone curve so you have a few option to choose from when you open your images in RT then maybe we can use the minimum amount of mouse clicks to get the result that you might want. It would be great to get the results with a few clicks creating a custom profile like a preset in other programs. Even when other photographers talk about presets they mention its a starting point. I'm not sure it that helps, there just my thought on the subject. Peace be unto you.

Can you crop from outside the frame (as you can in Affinity) so that no part of the original image is lost? There will be a blank space at the top and bottom or either side (depending on the crop ratio) of the image which can be filled with a solid colour using the fill tool.
@NaturalProfile7 ай бұрын
Greetings. As far as I know its not possible like in Affinity being a Raw editor. The little experience I had with Affinity was trying the demo version to use the printing options in the software quite a while ago.

You renamed an existing profile. How do you save your profile without overwriting an existing one?
@NaturalProfile8 ай бұрын
Greetings. When someone saves there custom profile instead of just renaming an existing one like I did in the example, it should come up as a raw file extension like CR2 for canon or RW2 for a panasonic camera. eg (1245773.RW2.pp3). Then you can name your custom profile what you like. Just make sure you keep the .pp3 to save your new custom profile. I hope that helps. Peace be unto you

@@NaturalProfile I found out my problem was that I wasn't logged on to windows as administrator. I wasn't allowed to save to program files directory. Solved by saving to a different directory. Then exiting RT and copying file to RT sub folder (windows gives an option to have admin privelages when you do this)

For me, this is a most useful and effective video. It is so for some key reasons, when compared to too many other 'tutorial' style videos here. The first reason, for me, is that you demonstrate a good understanding of an appropriate pace for audio-visual communication on a technical subject. You do not act such as to make the viewer think that the industrial strength laxative you ingested 30 minutes ago is about to prove effective, or that the studio is on fire. Well done. Secondly, you demonstrate quite clearly, using the mouse pointer, precisely what the many options - a lot of them not obviously apparent - do, in this functionally rich tool. This gives the viewer confidence to try for themself. Thirdly, you point out some of the 'side effects' and how to cater for them. Overall, then, a most valuable 20 minutes or so of my time. Thank you.

Thanks a lot as usual! It is always interesting to watch a comparison between an open source software such as RawTherapee and a commercial one (Lightroom). In your view, are there some big advantages about using Rawtherapee from a pure tecnical prospect compared to Lightroom (that is, not considering the obvious free aspects)? At home, I have been using both Rawtherapee and Dxo Photolab. The latter allows you to create dcp files without passing through Adobe dng converter. At work, I only work with Rawtherapee since I can install it on many computers for free. Needless to say, Happy new year!

Greetings. I don't think I have that amount of understanding about comparing Rawtherapee to other programs like Lightroom. As for editing, I try to make it as simple as I can. To say what the advantages are of Rawtherapee from a technical point, I would mention is the amount of demosaicing options.

Thank you so much!!! Your lessons are very useful and interesting. I've been trying to understand RAW Therapee for a long time. But there are so few lessons. I am not a native English speaker, and I am using a translator). I have a question about this lesson. In the Color Management module, in the DSP Illuminant group, I don't have anything to select. Probably these parameters need to be activated somehow. Do more lessons! Sincerely.

Greetings. When using the Color Management, under the custom option, the DCP illuminant selections are not supported by all cameras in Rawtherapee. Another camera that I use is also not supported for that cr2 raw file. I hope that helps you with your Question. Peace be unto you
