The sound of the guitar (the album sound) opened my heart I was 13 and never understood sound or music or heart before. Dont know if I ever really will be able to… but fuck it, this is enough 🌒❤️

Willy could put more jazz chords and changes into one “country” song than every other country writer in history… combined.

absolutely stunning . thank you , kind sir, for these recordings. i dont think anyone else posted this tour. i remember there were signs that said no recordings or cell phones or photos to be taken, and the concert i attended in SF,. there were thought police going up and down every isle. it was so annoying and distracting. and an expesnxive concert, but i am so glad somebody recorded it .

I saw Rickie in Houston in 1981. Honest to heavens, she was two hours late for the show. The crowd was very irritated . . .and had every right to be. But she had a very good band and once they kicked in, the crowd seemed to warm up to her. However, she is one of the most unusual artists in music. She's definitely an artist's artist. She seems almost detached and aloof, but I'm sure it's just her manner. When you cut through the strangeness, she really is talented. I have found with her music, you have to let go of your own rigidity. You have to go with her flow, or you won't like the music. Her style in a way is intransigent, but I don't think she means for it to be. It's just the way she is.

i agree! not everyone can appreciate this amazing talent nor listen to her songs. Just some people can really understand her style.

la muerte, you're absolutely right. For instance, great country song writers have this special knack for feel that is SO different than pop music. The same goes for Rikki Lee Jones. You can't compare her with other artists or other genres because hers is SO different, yet extraordinarily refreshing. It's moot to compare her to other artists because it's like comparing apples to oranges. By the way, her Skeletons album truly is genius.

Not only compare, you cant even sing her songs the way she sang it. you just cant! because she sang a song that only she knows what story hidden behind every song, what emotion should she express, how deep is the song go, only she knows.

La muerte, I couldn't agree more. Her melodic/rhythm is highly unusual. I think it would very difficult to set her melodies to manuscript because she almost sings OUT of the pocket. That's not a critique. I have the utmost respect for her talent and abilities.

I sure I could find Rickie Lee Jones performing "Satellites" LIVE on a late night show back in the 1990's (right around the time the album came out". She had Patti Austin, Emmylou Harris, & Reba McIntire backing her on background....it was of the chain. Patti, Emmylou and Reba slayed the background vocals and Rickie was doing her thing on lead vocals. I wish someone could upload that performance. I don't remember what show it was on...but it was tv.

I think this is the masterpiece cut from her masterpiece album. The most original and sophisticated song she ever wrote. It ranks with the best of the best of Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro. I love it.

@@farmyardflavours Rickie (and Joni) has said she was influenced by Laura, but did not elaborate on how. I think it's an abstract influence. To me, Traces doesn't really sound like anything of Laura's in particular. It's tougher and grittier. I'd say We Belong Together reveals more direct comparison to Laura's work. On the other hand, Joni's Paprika Plains sounds a lot like New York Tendaberry.
