So in the beginning of your video you showed dusted flies that you start your cultures. What is the dust, why do it, and how much do you use? Also is the dust that keeps them from jumping around in your container before you add them to the culture?

So they sex out depending on gestational temperature sort of like crocodiles? Are the bigger ones carniverous? I know green tree frogs will have a proportion of carniverous tadpoles in a clutch of tadpoles. How did they go?

I looked on Amazon, but could not find "mite paper" or "bug paper." Could you please show a picture of this or the specific item from Amazon? In fact, I'm having trouble finding the 32 oz containers with vented lids - that aren't so expensive or have bad ratings. I found one set of 10 for about $16, but that seems quite expensive. Thank You. Very helpful video!

Never put hot water especially boiling water in plastic why? Because the chemicals in the plastic will bleed into the culture and into your flies and ultimately in your fish thus shortening their lives please use your brain at all times!

Thanks for your helpful videos. Your videos helped me immensely when I was just starting! I wanted to share what I have been doing that has killed all of my mites. I am using plastic tubs like you but instead of bug paper I am using diatomaceous earth. I put about a 1/4" - 1/2" layer of the white powder in the bottom of each tub and then set the jars directly into the powder so the fruit fly cultures are completely surrounded by the powder. I have been using the same powder for over a year now without changing it and it still works 100% and appears quite fresh. At the beginning, I could see piles of dead mites in the powder surrounding the bottom of each fly culture jar but now I don't notice any mites anywhere. I thought the powder might be messy and get everywhere but it doesn't. Also, since it's used outside of the jars it doesn't kill the flies. My cultures are booming and mite free thanks to your help, plastic tubs, diatomaceous earth, and HEHERP.

Hey I know this is from 5 years ago, but I recently am doing fly cultures and I heard about the mites problem. I have lots of houseplants and buy predatory mites for spider mite infestations. Do you think that they could help curb mites from fruit flies? do you know what the species of mites is that attacks fruit flies?
@davidhart9106 Жыл бұрын
I'm confused. At 0:20, you say they're flightless, then at 3:00, you say if you don't dust them they're "gonna fly everywhere."

I think they're cute and a littleannoying to handle, obviously they're everywhere if you don't keep an eye on it 😂 But those who can fly! Uuuugh I really really hate those 😅😤 Almost was a disaster when I cultured some today but I managed to catch some who tried to escape and a lot I pretty much squeezed a little too hard😬

Such a beautiful place.I would probably end up walking around in the woods for hours.When I was a kid and my parents would take me on vacation I was always day dreaming about walking deep into the forest.My parents of course did not like that idea.One of my favorite places was called skyline drive. We used to stay in little log cabins that smelled like cedar and we were able to see the wildlife. It feels like a dream now because we used to walk right up to deer and elK and they would allow me to pet them and they would eat from my hand.

Recently, I set my small painting business aside, needing to relocate, in order to see family on need of help. When we break our monthly profits down into hours spent, some of us sorta get to pick and choose our work. In other words, in regards to profit, we would sometimes much rather work 1 hour on advertising, or furthering our research for purchases etc, rather than paying myself $40 per month, to wash glass jars etc , for a half hr. every month washing jars, or whatever... Plus the heated water cost, the detergent, the jars are harder to get my hands into, when anything is stuck hard in the bottoms... That leads to soaking them on hot water, which is multi step process, totally aggravating to some of us, when we just want to sit and watch our creatures....

The terrariums are all amazing. There are so many people that are doing reptile videos now and there are not many people who have anything that is quite as nice as the terrariums that are shown in this video. Everything looked well established and seemed to be flourishing. The variety of plants was pretty impressive too.
