Near Rawtenstall. There's a small village outside called Waterfoot. A carpark by the coal yard provides free all day parking. The route returns you right back to your car.

Bit of a cheek doing the route ON THE DAY OF the sportive (and even cheekier making a video about it 😂). However, I think at the end you said that you did about 35km (could have misheard that) and according to the Glorious Gravel website the 2 route options were 70 & 102km, so maybe comparing oranges with apples there. Also, I think that Chris Hall did a similar route (at least part of it), starting at Lancaster Railway Station. So I could have caught the train to Lancaster, go to do the route and found myself in the middle of a sportive. How embarrassing 😳
@keepcyclingadventures

Thanks for your comments. I guess this is down to everyone having a different perspective. For me, long as people do not use the feed stations (I didn't), nor use any agreed closed lanes/fields etc (there weren't any on this route) then personally I don't see the issue. Same with making a video, as all public routes or BWs. I did approx 50K in the end, of which maybe 20-25K shared the route. I would have paid the entrance fee and joint if the organisers had kept the event open (closed Thursday of event week).

@@keepcyclingadventuresSo, very roughly, 50% of yr route coincided with 33% of the med route and 25% of the long route. Are you sure that the routes weren’t via Carnforth, as it was all a bit of a… brief encounter 😂

I hear you David. I understand there's an element of paying for local knowledge of the area and route planning. On this occasion the route was straightforward regardless of knowing the area or not. Support local village shops is also very important. Sounds like we have the same mindset.

You did the right thing, why pay £50 to ride public rights of way you can do for free. There are two climbs out of Slaidburn, Bowland Knotts that I usually do from the Clapham side and Cross o Greet I do from Slaidburn.And of course Salter Fell makes three.

Why pay £50? Because some people prefer food stops, signage, GPX files, on-site mechanics, a broom wagon and beer (a beer wagon, now there’s an idea 🤔) I actually think that that’s decent value for money, if that’s yr preference. Obvs YMMV
