If you are going to talk about bushcraft, think about modifying the sheath by installing one rivet to keep the blade from coming out forward. There, I fixed it. If you want to split wood, buy a Sotz Monster Maul in 16 ounce or 24 ounce version. Forget batoning. You can make wooden splitting wedges with your knife. Do not throw your knife or make a spear out of it. Strike your ferro rod with a tiny dedicated steel striker. Carry a folding saw or a Victorinox wiss Army Knife that has a saw blade or carry a Leatherman tool with a saw blade. Carry a backpacker's trowel such as the Ezee if you want to dig. Use your knife to notch traps, whittle, prepare food, process fish and game, defend yourself, cut up cordage and for incidental medical first aid tasks. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

@BeefT-Sq thanks for watching yeah I agree with the sheath modification however there is no room to put a rivet at the bottom & no room to stitch it either the nylon Seam on the sheath at the opening is exact same width as the knife I already thought about doing that. So thinking of another way to do it. & unless my survival absolutely depended on it I would never use my knife to dig or pry or use as a spear when I could just make one. I was just stating that the knife is tough enough to do the above if you needed to do that. When u use my ferro rod if you watched any of my other videos aswell I do state that I never ever use my knife to strike a ferro rod I always use the striker that came with it. However I always point out that if you misplace your striker or lose it you could use the knife to strike the rod if you modified the spine like I did. The reason I always prefer a sharp spine is not for ferro rod but for scraping bark or removing moss or scraping fibres for bushcraft etc. It has its uses having a sharp spine. The width of this blade is huge so could easily use it to dig if absolutely necessary if you lost your gear or misplaced your digging tool etc. These are just options & for me a last resort your knife is your life I agree it is a tool an extention of your arm & is to be used as such. I would class this knife as a survival knife not your typical bushcraft knife it can do most things a traditional bushcraft knife can't but master of none. I think people sometimes take wot I say as gospel & think I do all the things I say this knife could do. Buy actually I'd rather not & agree with you 100%. If you break or damage your tool beyond repair then you've had it in my opinion especially if your survival depended on it. Yes you can use this knife for bushcraft tasks if you have the skill but its too big & cumbersome for a typical bushcraft knife so that's why I class it as a heavy duty survival knife as I think there is a big difference. But I do agree with you thanks for watching 🙂

That is absolutely beautiful,😮 excellent choice of steel too. Im drooling looking at that thing. It's a simple yet beautiful blade design. Mental health has been a battle I've been fighting since middle school. I'm 50 yrs old now and am just now dealing with much of it and understanding why I am the way I am. The hardest thing for me is when I lose interest in my hobbies and things that bring me joy. It can happen overnight and last for a few days or months, I hate it. Thanks for making your video and admitting you battle with mental health . You are not alone, friend. Enjoy that new blade .

It’s a nice knife, but I prefer a pointy blade for more delicate work. Easier to get into delicate places. Or remove wood in small areas like those notches. Just easier and more efficient. I believe the sole purpose of the blunted tip was purely for skinning and gutting purposes. Obviously given the time period, it would have been a mandatory requirement of survival. Therefore a necessity. And if you require that on your large knife, then you can get away with it by using your pocket knife for the finer work. Which we know he carried. Other than the tip, it’s a standard knife. It has a long flat area that’s sharp and does 90+% of all the work. I prefer a puukko for my needs. As long as you place a finger on the pointy bit it will gut/skin safely. Any thoughts ? How do you get along with a puukko? What’s the reason you prefer the Kephart ?

Linder made a 440c version with the cokebottle handle and a marlinspike. There is a cheap chinese copy being marketed as a German Navy knife. I carried a gifted one in the USCG. I cut more than a few fouled nets and lines, cleaned fish and the shiny blade let impolite people SEE The wisdom of not challenging my authority. So much for black tactical blades! I know kephart didn't invent the pattern but he did modify it by having one made to his specs. & his version was his own design & completely different to a normal looking sailor & boat knife. Horrace kephart wasn't perfect by any means nobody is perfect. He drank too much & was even admitted into a mental hospital at one stage. But to say he was unpleasant is a bold statement as nobody who knew him & wrote about him has never said he was unpleasant. I know his wife left him & took the kids but that don't prove he was unpleasant that was because he lost his job & was broke that could happen to any family & was his wife only after the money? Is that why she left him we will never know. So from source do you speak from I'd be interested in reading it. Thanks for watching 🙂

I have a number of Trackers. I agree with you that the Tops is junk. It’s a toy and not to be taken seriously. The grinds are all wrong and the traction coating is a mess. I have the T1 and the T4. I do like that little T4 but for different reasons that you buy a large tracker for. I also have two Bark Rivers and they are extremely high quality with all the proper grinds. The are expensive and heavy but wonderful to use. I also bought a $40.00 Big Cat Roar just to see how it would look and I would take that over a Tops and day. With all that said I Love the tracker you’re showing and look forward to getting one. There are two major issues with it though. 1. The straight section needs to be hollow ground. Period. 2. I do like the saw but it should be shorter by an inch or two at the chopping section so you’re not battoning on the saw. Bark river removed the saw completely but I do wish they had that section.
@scottnorvell2955
@scottnorvell2955 4 ай бұрын
Every TRUE tracker knife based on Russons original design has a hollow grind on the straight section. It is for detailed work. That grind should never be used for battoning. A hollow grind is not durable but very slicey. The convex grind is correct for the chopping section.
@lonewandererbushcraftwildc6822
@lonewandererbushcraftwildc6822 4 ай бұрын
Yeah I agree about the hollow grind not suitable for batoning. As its really a slicing edge & the steel will be thin in that area. However I do have a buck 124 frontiersman which I use to process wood all the time. & that is a hollow grind however because of the thick secondary bevel they put on the edge it can take it. As long as your not moving the blade side to side & keep it straight shouldn't have a problem. It's not the edge of a knife that splits the wood it's the thickness of the shoulder or top end of the bevel that splits the wood. So if the steel is thick in that area it will act as a splitting wedge. So in theory the thicker the blade the better it will split

A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. I've been using the Woodsman by Origin Knives for over a year and a half now in the mountains and jungles of Costa Rica and it still looks brand new. Kevin is a master designer and bladesmith, you won't find a better grind or temper job. After going thru Bark River Trackker, TOPS and Beck....My Origin Knives are the only ones that I haven't modified. Literally everything else stays on the shelf at home when I go out. Shelters, traps, kuksa, spoons, one log fires, rings, boxes, shuttles and more solely using the Woodsman. The saw might not be as convenient as a handsaw but it's not suppose to be, it works and gives you more options. Great review, I subscribed!

Agreed wow you subbed to my channel that's a great honour coming from someone like you been watching your channel for a while now. I've trackers in the past but none are better then the origin I think kev probably makes some of the best knives I've ever seen & used. & the stv is no exception the saw on the tracker works very well with practice & there is absolutely nothing wrong with a saw. But it's a personal preference thing the way I use knives I use every part of it as a knife is a tool not just for carving. & this is where the saw is a problem because I need to put my hand on the spine I know it comes with a cover however me being me eventually I'll misplace it lol & the saw just eats batons for breakfast 😅 So I'm going to save up & buy another one without the saw to fit my needs. When I've saved up I'll probably sell the stv to someone who needs a saw on there's but until then I'll continue to use it to gain more experience with it. Thanks for watching buddy 👍

I have the original version without the handle scales. I love the blade and the steel is so tuff I can not get a hole drilled in it with my drill press. I even used a diamond bit my locksmith buddy uses to drill safes and vaults to get a camera in. Even the tiniest pilot bits won't penatrate. It's a budget version of the Recon Scout basically but man that 52100 steel can take abuse and takes a razor sharp edge. Thanks for the great testing and input.

It's not meant to skin stuff, it's a dedicated line cutter. Because the most dangerous stuff at sea are entanglements, especially during the sail age. Notice how the belly is so pronounced that the blade has a downswept edge, while a regular knife has an edge pointing upward. This knife is designed to grab and dig into the rope instead of sliding off onto the wet rope. It is also more efficient for wirst flick cuts and flying cuts.
@lonewandererbushcraftwildc6822
@lonewandererbushcraftwildc6822 5 ай бұрын
I was merely on about it's other uses it could be used for not wot it was designed for I've actually skinned & gutted with this knife. But cutting through heavy duty rig s this knife would definitely struggle as it struggled to cut through even basic rope & the knife was like a razor. So this knife would not be my first option to take to sea this knife Grind is way too shallow to cut rope with I've tried it. A much higher bevel would be better if you look at the seaman's knife or navy knife made by William rodgers of sheffield the Apex on that is thinner then the Otter making it alot better for slicing through rope. I'll do a video comparison. Thanks for watching 🙂

It’s been on my radar as well, one came up on BushcraftUK, but I ummed and ahhed about it because it had a repair on the tab that holds the knife in. The guy replaced the tab on it and I snapped it up, it’s a carbon steel one with buffalo horn slabs which looks really nice. Depending on how the repair job looks, I may make a new sheath for it. It’s the no. 4 and cost me £105 with postage included. I’ve used Lamnia a few times now with no issues.
