a few points on purgatory, indulgences, and how they relate to the reformation. Martin Luther was correct in that he admonished the selling of indulgences, but he didn't fully condemn the practice. In fact, out of the 95 thesis, only 1 even mentions indulgences, #71, “Let him who speaks against the truth concerning papal indulgences be anathema and accursed.” Also... his major problem with catholicism wasn't purgatory, and it wasn't indulgences. It was free will. He struggled greatly with the concept of salvation, so much so that he made it the cornerstone of his theology. In Luther's book, The Bondage of the Will, he engages with Erasmus and says "you alone, have attacked the real thing, that is, the essential issue. you have not worried me with those extraneous issues about the papacy, purgatory, indulgences and such trifles, rather than issues... you, and you alone, have seen the hinge on which all turns and aimed for the vital spot. For that I heartily thank you."

Thank you for clarifying. I do agree Luther's main problem was free will, and how it connected to justification by faith. It seemed as though the selling of indulgences in Germany was "the last straw" that provoked him. Blessings!

@@DivineDestinyMinistriesChurch thank YOU for offering studies that capture attention and provoke thought. I think the topic of the Eucharist is a deep topic with compelling arguments on both sides. Martin Luther didn't teach that it was symbolic, in fact he was fairly close to the catholic view, where he taught the idea of consubstantiation. Calvin also believed there was a spiritual presence to it. Zwingli was the only reformer who believed it was purely symbolic.

I thank God for the Presence and Revelation of Holy Spirit in my life. I thank God for the solid and good teaching from you, Pastor Scott. I am actually watching this a day late. I wish I was there with you. I would share a testimony on that verse from Paul speaking about '"understanding" and how the Lord taught me those verses by Holy Spirit for me to share with someone who was teaching it wrong. I was such a babe but He used me in a simple and profound way. I approached the Lord as a child, and He taught me as a child. But in a way that made it clear and wonderful. You taught well and correctly and I am so thankful I was able to receive it. I love how the Holy Spirit brings us exactly what we need when we need it. I needed that reminder. God Bless you for your obedience.
