Felipe Costa is such a humble dude and willing to train with anyone and show you anything. He doesn't pretend to be a magician and is a good mentor. I'm glad and feel lucky he comes to visit our gym from time to time!

Chris literally reignited my passion for Jiu Jitsu after my original Gracie school was destroyed in a flood in Brisbane, Australia and it seemed like all that was out there was sport. Because of him, I've found a way to train and still think about self defense I thought I was mad hearing people say things like: "No standing, we're starting from knees like a real fight" After asking about strikes from someone in my guard "they can't strike you from there, it's illegal" And the worst "Jiu Jitsu has nothing to do with striking, that's what the Muay Thai class is for" This sht has blown my fkn mind and I genuinely thought I was going insane for a while. Listening to Chris's interviews and the chance to get a few questions answered by him has saved my Jiu Jitsu journey. Edit: I can't agree more with the conversation about instructors not knowing how to instruct. One of the places I've trained at has a 3rd or 4th degree black who runs the school.... terrible teacher... a lot of the time he'll say things like "stop getting put in guard so much" and when asked to elaborate "just don't get caught in guard" and that's the advice for a white belt two weeks in or a purple belt. Then there's the 2 stripe Brown Belt who wants to make sure you understand why the technique works, why you should put your foot there not the other spot etc.

Love the Pisao, excellent entrance to a clinch, also a lot of these schools seriously claim Self Defense but have NOTHING to do with actual Self Defense, but they use it as a gimmick.
@Ullish19892 күн бұрын
Absolutely, I've seen literally 2 schools in my area start a "women's self defense" class that after maybe 4 classes just turned into a 30 "warm up" 10 minute "technique" and 30 minutes of rolling... after maybe 6 classes it wasn't even women's only

Awesome. I use a dummy to drill most of the escapes, guard passes, sweeps and submissions. I prefer to drill the movements just as I would attempt to execute them during rolling. But it's whether it's drilling the movements as a whole or doing drills like in this video, they're both great for muscle memory and keeping the momentum going physically and mentally.

Most people don’t do the basics like video their session, watch it back, looks for mistakes, correct them, etc. In chess this is second nature and everyone does it. Most jiu jitsu schools and their students are pretty backward when it comes to training methods. Most schools don’t have a curriculum nor video the session so students can watch or review back the session. These are basic learning methods.

4 yr old dominated by stronger partner every day until he cried and says I want to quit my heart is broken daddy I am not good the other kid is too strong! My heart as a father broke when I heard this I died inside. Absolutely crushed to see his break down in class and in the car. Horrible feeling of powerlessness and guilt
@TheROLRadioPodacast6 ай бұрын
@bajito4347 - This should not happen, no child should be crying after training. Jiu Jitsu should be challenging and building kids not destroying them. Sounds like a conversation with instructors is needed, a little planning and conversation could change everything. I'm happy to help contact me on IG @rozdzynskibjj

Hello, I'm one of your students and I'm currently struggling with my mental health. I have zero confidence and no self worth anymore. Getting out of bed is a struggle and I keep asking myself what's the point when point of getting up and getting moving when nothing changes or keeps getting worse. I fought off addiction to drinking and smoking the green stuff and I'm hoping coming to your classes will help restore what I've lost in myself. Thanks for this episode, it was great.

Hi 👋 gentlemen So many valid opinions on both your parts, about where is JJ heading in the future. IMP JJ is like every other contact MA, at no time will the professional out way the average Joe. What I mean is there will be 10% semi/pro level athletes, and 90% guys like me, so it will be practically impossible for it to disappear, and that is in everything: boxing, MA, MMA, Olympians, and every other sport. Here is food for thought Professors: if we really want to gage or start getting a better understanding of the road JJ is going also interview the average school, instead of the high profile instructor. The little guy is the root of JJ for the 90% that will never go pro or even do more than a few tournaments, and the only reason that happens is so they can have something to talk about. Thank you 🙏 OSS

Hello gentlemen and thank you for having such a great guess. There is so much to talk about with this follow up , but I’ll keep it short. Bio: I have 34 years experience in MA’s and have had 4 schools. Started JJ at 52 and still training, 58 now. My current school is in Tampa , Florida area. What I have experienced and watch podcast like yours, too help educate me more, or at least to here other opinions/experience. We are the cause of all topics you touched on. Prof. Eric just didn’t forget his roots. And that is the narrative in our JJ society. Ex: Forget your roots, who are they kind of mentally. I don’t like wearing pajamas (Gi), why should I bow to this person, No Gi is the new Kimono, I saw this on KZbin, I want to work on this not what your teaching, omg 😱, I could go on forever. JJ is such a beautiful art and we are almost destroying it. OSS 🙏
