I know this is old but I’m going through this now. His mother TEXT me calling me all kinds of names and being highly disrespectful. My text back was extremely respectful and short. So now they hate me more because I didn’t feed into their drama. He’s a mama’s boy and I’m not like that with anyone I know. They talk about me behind his back because according to him and I this came out of left field and were just talking positive about me. They literally have no reason to not like me. Im currently going through this where my mother in law is toxic and manipulative and openly told her son to leave our relationship and that it has someone nicer and better for him out there ,sad part is this shock the hell out of me ,she manipulated me soo much into believing everything is all good between us and i respect her ofc so i thought our relationship was solid only to hear her say this to him and worse she said she never liked me anyway .....all those times we spent together and the christmas dinners and stuff ,her checking up on me and stuff ,is all fake .....atp i dont even know what to do ,i wont leave my man ever over something like this ,i truly love him and for that i will continue to try to be respectful and chill with her but it hurts a lot to know that she couldve said that without ease as if she hasnt been a mother figure to me due to our bond.She also has done a lot of crap to her own marriage and im trying to understand how someone who cheated and worse and say its becaude they were unhappy ,see their son in a happy relationship and say what she said ,it makes zero sense to me ,any advice is veey much appreciated. Sixty year old married woman, here. Lots of experience with toxic in-laws. The answer to the question of "is it important for my in-laws to like me"? Is no. The answer is no. It is not important for them to like you. As a woman (wife) if you have female in-laws, it's almost guaranteed that they won't like you. They see you as competition. The more you make it important that they like you, the more they have power over you. You have to accept that they don't like you. You can still have a happy marriage even if they don't like you. Because you are married to your husband............not his family. If your husband loves you and he is a strong assertive man, he will defend you. If he doesn't, then that is a serious problem and you need to either divorce, or start defending yourself. Start accepting that they don't like you. It's ok. Really, it is. You don't like them either, so this makes you equals now. Just live your life with your husband. No fake smiles. No fake hugs and compliments. No sending of greeting cards that you really don't want to send. Why? If your husband expects you to ingratiate yourself to his family to "win them over" ask yourself, is he doing the same things with YOUR family? Does he care if YOUR family likes HIM? Probably not. Because this is a "female" issue. Don't play that game. Be different. Your family probably likes your husband because a son in law is usually automatically accepted into the wife's family. It's not the same for us wives. We have to deal with "F.R.A". (female relational aggression) from your husbands FEMALE relatives. Is your father or your brother insulting your husband, or rolling their eyes at him? Guaranteed NOT! Men don't do this to each other. Women do. Be different. Be different by not caring that they don't like you. Because 9 times out of 10, they won't. It doesn't matter. It won't matter when you stop trying to get them to "like" you.
