Terfel is one of the few opera singers who can cross over and perform this music well. His Sweeney Todd is also excellent.

Not even close. The charm of the original was that it was so convincingly Russian Jewish. This man's is not even close.

Meravigliosa, si sente fin dal primo attacco tutta la Fede di una preghiera, ma anche la paura, il presentimento della fine di tutto, della morte imminente. Che comunque si avverte dall'inizio dell'atto, durante la Canzone del salice. Grandissima Ghena! Ho avuto la fortuna di lavorare con lei nel 1995 al San Carlo di Napoli: ha cantato una Tosca stupenda, indimenticabile. Era una donna molto umile, come tutti i grandi artisti.

This rubs me the wrong way. I can appreciate his mastery of singing it, but everything else is antithetical to the point of the song. Clearly, a man in a Tuxedo with a professionally trained voice in a theater that only the rich can attend makes it hard to be impressed in the lyrics. This is the pinnacle of “rich”, with no props or effort made to simulate a truly poor man letting his heart be shown to God through music. He even gets the initial words wrong (perhaps on purpose) where he says “you made many many rich people” it should be “poor people”. A lot feels off is all I’m saying.

To me, Chaim Topol's performance in the 1971 film will always be the best version ever, but this is the runner-up.

Seen Terfel live at the Met at least half a dozen times in various roles, including the updated Ring Cycle, and admittedly, there is none like him these days. However, in my opinion, he stank up this song like none other, and this is DEFINITELY NOT the "best version ever" of this song by a long shot, as the title of this video would suggest. It literally made me cringe watching him as much as listening to him destroy this classic Broadway song. Sorry. Not for me.

Not a surprise! one of our very top singers today! Want more humor? See him sing Figaro in mozart's opera the Marriage of Figaro, with Cecilia Bartoli as Susanna....years ago but still the best cast! (you can rent it or any opera from the Met opera for a few bucks_.
