Chiptune is a genre of music that is based on real-time synth playback. Much the same way that a MIDI is compiled and interpreted against an Audio device. While anything that uses a low sample rate, and synth, coud potentially qualify as chiptune, The genre is heavily based (for now) on techno. Thus at this point, you COULD consider chiptune to be a mini-genre of techo, but such a statement would forever limit the scope of music created in the same fashion as current chiptune that we know.
