Love the performance. Although, there is quite a noticeable difference compared to the Te Maeva Nui in Rarotonga. A very interesting comparison. Distinct sounds and beats and moves associated with specific islands in the Cook Islands are all mashed into one in the Island groups in the Akirata Ou. As long as the culture is alive and the tradition taught correctly, no worries aye :) Great stuff!

I'M SORRY BUT THIS IS NOT RAKAHANGAN DANCING.... NOR ITS RAKAHANGA DRUM BEATS. IM A REAL PROUD RAKAHANGA BORN AND RAISED ALL MY UPBRINGING I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH DANCE AND DRUM BEATS DONE BY MY PARENTS AND MY ANCESTORS WHILE LIVING IN RAKAHANGA . OUR RAKAHANGA CULTURE IS VERY UNIQUE AND IS WELL RESPECTED BY THOSE WHO ARE TAUGHT NA MEA OTE WHARE AS IT WAS PRONOUNCED IN THE DRUM DANCE. SPEAKING OF DRUM DANCE ONE IMPORTANT ACTION MISSING IN THE DRUM DANCE IS THE "RORE" RORE HAS BEEN PART OF RAKAHANGA CULTURE FOR MANY THOUSANDS OF YEARS IN THE PRESENCE DAYS OF OUR ANCESTORS, THE RORE REPRESENTS THE BEAUTY OF A WOMEN DANCING WITH GRACE AND RESPECT. AS THE RORE NOT BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED IN THIS PARTICULAR DRUM DANCE, THIS IS HOW WE AS RAKAHANGA PEOPLE WILL LOOSE OUR CULTURE.... WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY IS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU DOING PLEASE ASK OUR METUA PAKARI TO GUIDE WHO EVER THE FAKAHAERE FOR THE RAKAHANGA CULTURE GROUP TO BE ABLE TO TEACH OUR CULTURE IN THE MOST APPROPRIATE WAY AS IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. AS FOR THE DRUM BEATS PLEASE RUTU MAI NA PAHU RAKAHANGA NOT PA HENUA RUTU PAHU NOT MANIHIKI RUTU PAHU BUT RAKAHANGA RUTU PAHU........

Kia orana, to let you know the leaders of our group if you haven't been told ARE from Manihiki as well as Rakahanga, they are also champion tutors for individual dancers as well as groups like this. The theme of this festival was specifically 'Ka tu ka aere, ka pipiti tatou ki mua' so for our interpretation of this, it became a matter of incorporating the tradition of the manihiki AND rakahanga style of dance as well as a more modern based culture and style to dancing. What you must realize is that just because one move is not acknowledged does not mean we are losing it. The approach taken on this particular item was in direct correlation with the theme we were given. If this offends you then that is completely your decision, however I do think that some amount of respect should go to the people who took this group to represent the island of Rakahanga since no one else put their hand up to do the job. Its easy to judge an item like this, but its not so easy to raise your hand and be the one to teach 'na mea o te fare' as you say. Kia orana e kia manuia :)
