However the benefit of recording from a distance is you'll get a more wild and natural behavior out of the animals instead of a cautious of humans behavior. Wind direction can also impact this to an extent, though bears do have very strong noses, so it can be difficult to keep them unaware of your presence. The wind was strong that day, though i'm not abundantly sure if it was in my favor I may have been up wind as opposed to the preferred down wind. It took them a couple minutes to take notice of the male bear who wasnt very far away from them. I reckon I went relatively unnoticed. If you're back country in a vehicle its best to stay in it, most animals can close a gap very quickly especially a mother with cubs if she feels they are threatened. The key is you don't want to disturb the animals you are recording, one for better natural footage but also in the interest of the conservation, you dont want them wasting calories fleeing from you or pursuing you. Also animals that display aggression towards humans typically end up destroyed or euthanized, so if you love the wildlife keep your distance.
