0:14 they're all laughing at his mannerisms and speech. He's a great pianist but an idiot savant type 😂

Each time I hear a performance of Rubinstein from his old age, I am astonished at how well he maintained the level of his playing. We can compare now on KZbin his performances of the same piece, recorded at various times of his life, and remarkably sometimes his playing is better the later it is. Here this performance is quite passionate.
Dear Luca, Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Like others here, I treasure these relatively unknown performances of Richter, in Italy and elsewhere, no matter how imperfect the sound quality. In 1976 Richter was at or near the zenith of his powers. How fortunate were those who were present in the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi for this performance!

And let me add: the last 5 minutes of this performance may represent Richter's deepest penetration of this piece. Grazie!

A lesson in how a great pianist can give a great performance whatever the circumstances; the conductor and orchestra aren’t with him very much but he makes no fuss about that and delivers nonetheless; he’s seen and heard them all and probably had far worse in his career. He’s probably more forgiving than the KZbin critics; he knows how hard it is; one of the things that made him such a sublime player was his ability to play so well was his lack of hubris-Rubenstein knew how right his own critics were about the wrong notes he often played were!
