As usual, the dubbed translations are inadequate. But the two lines I think are priceless: " There's a monster here!" and "Amnesia can be . . . difficult."

I give Shimizu a lot of credit, he turned a noise he made to annoy adults and other kids into something as iconic as F13’s “Ki Ki Ki, Ma Ma Ma”, whilst also making 4 pretty darn good movies on top of it. It’s a shame to see the franchise in such disarray these days. Ju-On origins was a fine side step, but maaaaannnn, I really wish the series shifted to the White Ghost / Black Ghost format for a while. Underlooked gems those are. Flawed, sure. But it still felt like Ju-On. Not Detective Cowboy Beebop and friends with sickly Victorian doll ghost doing the loud PANG jump skadoodles. Waste of a John Cho and Lin Shaye casting.

Even if I prefer Ringu Ju-On: The grudge is still a great movie. Speaking of Ringu the crossover movie Sadako vs Kayako is pretty fun, maybe not as terrifying as their original movies but with a title like that what can you expect.

Great video! I’m reminded of the first time I saw this movie in high school and how i was on edge for a solid week after viewing it. There have been some fun haunted house style movies that have come out since but none ever really got under my skin quite like Ju-on or Ringu in their heyday.

Thinking about it, you might have fun with a Japanese Horror anthology thats been making waves here on KZbin for the last year. If you haven’t watched anything from the channel “Fake Documentary Q” you might treat yourself to that! They have some fun segments!

Despite the short run time i would say that season 2 is my favorite of the whole series. It explores my fav character, has a massive reveal that manages to still make sense and have foreshadowing

This series of films deserves to be celebrated right alongside it's classic Chambara forebearer LONE WOLF AND CUB. I agree that the "proper" order to watch the series is 1-3, then 5 and 4 last. It gives the proceedings a poetic "before the end see how it all began" vibe. The sword fighting reached 11 and beyond with the final fight in Part 3 being the longest unbroken sword fight in cinema history. What truly sucks is that right now only the first three films are available on Blu Ray in the US, Netflix as usual is hording the last two to their streaming service. It will be interesting to see if we ever get a boxed set of the films like Criterion did with LONE WOLF AND CUB. Your fellow KZbinr "Bushido Blues" has done great reviews on the movies and even did a video on the order to watch them. Check him out sometime if you want recommendations for more Chambara films.

They were great adaptations of RK, specially of the final arc of the manga, hope that someday you watch the 1996 anime is pretty good (well at least until episode 62, which finishes Kyoto arc, the rest is filler) glad that you enjoyed the movies too

It’s kinda impressive how if you ask a lot of fans of the Manga they’ll tell you that, in spite of all the differences between this and the source, these are arguably the best adaptations of the lot. The OG Gallop Anime, classic though it may be, is generally agreed to fall off after the halfway point (and the less said about its OVAs the better, ESPECIALLY Reflections). These though? Yeah no, they still covey the overall heart of the story and, most importantly, actually covers the whole thing without sacrificing its core themes. I personally agree with this statement. My only issue with the movies is that while I understand what the director was going for, having The Final be released before The Beginning was a mistake, since I feel that a lot of Kenshin’s struggles in that film rely on you being fully aware of his relationship with Tomoe and how it affects him to the current day, making him finally choosing to let go of the past all the more meaningful. Still that’s overall a comparatively minor gripe, and overall I have far more good things to say than bad.

What you don't like "Trust and Betrayal"? Like the one considered one of the best anime OVA? I agree with the other ova's not being that great. But Trust and Betrayal though is so good that the live action took notes on it more on how to handle The Beginning story compared to how the manga portrayed them. Like Trust and Betrayal is so good people can watch them as standalone and they will still rate it as a great OVA. Yeah Reflection is more so bad mostly because it just end up doing its own thing but that does not take away from Trust and Betrayal since you can treat it as separate.

@@Snzn_7 A lot of the reasons are personal: I really love the Manga’s take on that arc and I honestly felt this uber-dark take wasn’t much to my liking. While The Beginning does take a lot of cues from it, I feel it managed to find a much better middle ground between that and being faithful to the source, especially when the character of Tomoe is concerned. At least the Live-Action version let her keep being a smartass instead of being constantly mysterious. More importantly though, I just don’t think it meshes well with the rest of the Anime. The OG Gallop series had energy and charm to it, this is slow and, in my honest opinion, rather dry. It would’ve worked fine if the idea was to provide contrast, but the fact that the later OVAs (Which carried over much of T&B’s staff) just copied its style wholesale just gives off the impression that they didn’t really understand what made the original story special: Kenshin’s supposed to be hopeful and optimistic, not a borderline nihilistic edge-fest. By contrast, at least The Beginning is more or less in tone with the rest of the movies, which makes it far easier for me to accept its changes. Not to mention it actually _does_ use its events to provide proper contrast, as you see that Kenshin in The Final is nothing like he was in The Beginning, versus Reflections and New Kyoto Arc, which pluck Bakumatsu-era Kenshin and puts him in the “Present” story.

@@sndark6241 I can see what is your problem with them, but for me at least regardless of what gripes I you with it, that does not discount what it does good. My 2 cents is don't just lump it together with Reflection and ask people to not talk about Trust and betrayal. You basically 'used" Reflection as the representative of the ova. For me I have gripes with the later half the OG anime due to an entire season of filler plus the pacing getting worse over time, but again I won't use those lowest point of the OG anime as the representative and use that to "dismiss: the entire series in its entirety. Like I will still consider the og series as the classic despite those flaws. Like I don't really get Akira myself and don't hail it as high as most people, but I can objectively see what it does good and will still recommend people to check it out. The live action overhauled Sanosuke's character but I am still fine with it since that version of Sanosuke work for the movies, in the same way Tomoe was tweaked to work for what Trust and betrayal was aiming for. Also again unlike the movies the ovas were like purposely separated from the tv series since cohesion to it was not like the priority. Since they made the third OVA to be in cohesion to the og series and have the style be more like the og but only modernized the visuals since its been almost a decade since they went back to the series. Also again Reflection was not bad due to its style, its because of how they handled the story and shove in their own original ending to the story. Like if people are gonna go check out the OG anime then I can suggest check out the OG in its entirety, they can skip the filler season if they want to, and they should still go check out Trust and Betrayal cause they are gonna miss out. I am framing this more in this way since people that might read our comments will surely be new to the franchise and honestly no one will recommend the manga at this point so I think its not really that great of an idea to give a preconception to people that "all" the ovas are bad and not even "worth talking about".

I have enjoyed his previous films so gave it a go and ugh it was a slog. I hated his deepfake ai non blinking face and the extended melodramatic romance scenes was absolute cringe. Visually it`s great otherwise and the big battle towards the end was excellent - the rings of power producers should have hired these guys. The film should have been an hour less than it was it really dragged in places. 5/10

Re: the same character designs for the female characters: They're called "Matsumoto Maidens." Look at Yuki and Starsha in Space Battleship Yamato, Maeter and Tetsuro's mother in Galaxy Express 999, Queen Millennia, and the female characters in Galaxy Railways. It's a trope in Matsumoto's works. He differentiates them by hairstyle and costume, but they have the same face (especially the eyes with the long eyelashes) and the same willowy proportions.

People trying to say that Transformers isn't mecha is like saying the Braves Series isn't mecha. It makes no sense and just seems like you're trying to split hairs over nothing.
