My goodness this brings back memories. I grew up with Nero, a Burrell Show man's engine and spent many happy hours helping my uncles with preparation and lots of polishing of brass. The pay off was to be steers man and occasionally when older to do all the prep work and get her in steam ready for the off when they got back from work.

This isnt a fire engine, it was supplied to Candy & Co, Brick and Tile Works in Newton Abbot. It is believed to have been used for pumping water & slurry in the clay pits
@mightydangerousbryan3 ай бұрын
Hi MrJones! We were basing the description on the Shand catalogue description of this class of engine. We weren't aware of the brickworks specific use for the engine, although we did suspect it would be primarily production process over fire support. Do you have any other info on the engine? Very little history came with it when the present owner bought it.
@SteamandThings2 ай бұрын
It was advertised by Shand Mason as a 'Fire Engine & Irrigating Engine.' Would be interested to know more of its history.

It's just great to drive the model machines in this way. The many small cylinders definitely have more volume than the single cylinder on the green steam tractor. 😁😉 Greetings Michael
@SteamandThings3 ай бұрын
It's not often you can get access to enough steam to run them all. Hopefully we'll do it again soon. I'll have to work out the volume of all the models and compare them to the full size engine. The engine was burning poor quality South African coal, and it wasn't as easy for it to keep up with the steam demand as you might think!

Hello Jim (NOT Colin!). As we discussed on the Sunday, your collection of model steam engines all actually running on steam was a marvellous sight to behold. Thank goodness that you took a high quality video because my mobile has gone belly-up during a software update and a local computer company is trying to save my data. In the meantime they told me to put the SIM into an old phone whereupon I saw your text message and link to your site. Thus I shall now be able to send a link to it to the SMEE Whatsapp Engine Builders Group. I spoke to them shortly after the show on a Zoom chat and they were mighty envious of my having seen such wonderful models working.

Interesting video, the engine looks to be working well on the governors. Burrells used the cross arm type governors changing to their own high speed governors for a few years before settling on the common Pickering type. It would be interesting to see a close up of the governors when the extra load was applied. Thanks for sharing this film.
@SteamandThings4 ай бұрын
The only engine I've ever seen with Burrell's own governors was a lovely old single crank compound engine that used to be in the threshing section at Dorset. The owner didn't have much good to say about them at the time! I'll try and grab some footage of the governors reacting to a load when we're down at Hollycombe with her next weekend.

I got a cheddar goliath in 2002 for my 18th birthday. She was supplied extremely stiff due to not having been run in at all, she has been my main locomotive ever since and only needed to go in for maintenence in 2024 when her vavle gear FINALLY slid out of time. At which point, despite heavy usage, she was deemed to still be in almost perfect condition mechanically. (minus needing a new safety valve) Cheddar engines are noticably too large for scale, but strong, reliable and amazingly well built and engineered, but the only models in scale too use iron for the bodywork.
@SteamandThings3 ай бұрын
