And now it will be sunk into the ocean as an artificial reef. Sad

She’s a beautiful ship and she was built at a time ( post war ) when America was strong and proud ! America was unified and built this beautiful girl ! I think at the very least she should be dry docked and cleaned up on the out side and let her stand as a once proud America ,like the (Statue or Liberty. )And then during her time in dry dock (over many years ) we can chip away at her restoration! But she must be able to stand as a symbol of America Strong !

Wasn't there an aluminum piano on the Hindenburg? In the Ocean Liner Museum in the South Street Seaport in NYC, there is a hand- written note on SS United States stationary from Joan Crawford to the Captain of the United States, asking him to slow the ship down because she is so seasick. The shallow draft of the liner, which enhanced her speed, also increased the likelihood of motion sickness. The United States was designed to continue under way even if a portion of her might be destroyed. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were constant travelers in the SS United States during their '50s heyday.

Seems like we are following the same path that our once amazing namesake has had to endure. From the idea that anything is possible, and doing it, to rotting away on camera due to mismanagement and failing to agree on what to do next. At least she may provide life again under the waves. Ironic given her design to stay afloat.

@VideoSSUSC So, is the Big U being sunk in Florida because Okaloosa approved the contingency plan? If so, I and the whole ocean liner community do not want this. We went to the ship to be preserved. If it's sunk, then it will slowly deteriorate under the water, just look at the Andrea Doria or the Titanic. There needs to be another way to save the United States from being sunk. As she bears the name of our great nation, losing her would be a blow to not only the legacy of ocean liners, but a blow to the pride of the United States.

30 million back then what a waste to send her to the bottom probably wouldn't take much to to bring them old steam engines back to life we made that and it serverd it's purpose restore it and let our children admire a American built flag ship come on pentagon restore the fucking thing don't send er to the bottom been floating a long time keep it that way keep America proud

SOS - Please save the SS United States. This ship is our national pride and joy, carries the name of our country, holds the Blue Riband speed record for fastest transatlantic crossing, and must be restored to showcase what a gorgeous technological marvel she was. To have her scrapped or turned into a coral reef is historical sacrilege. Please write to your Senators and Congress people to save this ship. www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

It's so sad to think that it was bigger than the Titanic. In some idiots, sitt5 in a room. That probably never seen going to sink it sad And they should never have touched engine room nor the deck I wonder when the last time it was actually ran I could imagine that they're still a lot of oil left in that ship
@Raginggamer44Ай бұрын
To be honest I'd rather the ship be scrapped then sunk. When being sunk it could land on its back or side. And if it's scrapped every piece of it could be sold for a few dollars or given free to people who have donated in the past. Pieces as well as her funnels could be given to museums and then that way the ship will be cherished even longer then it would as a reef. Carried down generation to generation so she is never forgotten.

SS UNITED STATES UPDATE: :( As much as we want her to be saved, it’s time to say goodbye. Her luck has finally ran out. It’s better for her to be sunk then scrapped, because she’d still exist. Just not above the water… #savetheunitedstates R.I.P SS United States

Well here is a idea to save the SS United States. As we watch al the documentaries, and the fact that she was stripped of all her interior features, how about the Conservancy consider repurposing her to be a Hospital and or rescue ship that would be able to transport vital material and or medical aid to anywhere on the planet. Another idea, since in 2 years, the United States of America will be celebrating it's 250 years of Independence, so the ship could be outfitted as a floating museum with artifacts on display of all the progress that has made America great. I would also think that the SS United States should find it's new home on the Hudson River, in lower New York City.
