FWIW, even though Li's relationship with Alise alludes to how Derek and Odette first saw each other in the first movie, I actually like the remixed version of that arc. It was hard to know why Derek and Odette changed their minds over one another after being separated, whereas Li started to be the sort of person that Alise could be attracted to (less haughty) while holding onto the good qualities he already had (a sense of noble propriety). Part of me even wonders if his talking to Alise about his family was something he rarely brings up to anyone so sharing this side of himself to her is a major step for him and shows that he really fell for her too.
