I hope you've read and taken on board the comments here. Whilst I do have some reservations about this book, I think that some of the things you have said about it are simply factually incorrect. I agree with the comment that (despite finding it 'a slog') you may need to read it again and pay more attention. As has been stated, he is not saying that something is good, bad or to be ignore, but more about an awareness of how we respond and managing that, to get optimal results. In other words to make the best of both the primitive parts of the brain and our ability to think logically. I hope you're not a psychology student - if you are, let's hope you have made some progress since this review.

Really enjoy your chair reviews. I think I've watched most of them. Just wondering, does the Regeneration have a similar seat to the Generation? i.e. a kind of perforated plastic base that the cushion goes over? So you sink into the seat, rather than it being flat. Thanks

Murder, tape, sodomy, torture.... are more male "activities" than female ones. Shocking, the manifest misogyny, as well as it's acceptance.

Helpful review. Quick question (I'm not sure if you've mentioned it), how tall are you? This is one of the biggest factors I am thinking about, as I am 6'7/8 and your shoulders are only just about at the top. Been looking for a new chair and have been doing lots of research. I know the Aeron does not "officially" support my height, but then again, none do so I have to make do. Very useful video, thanks!

I'm 6 feet tall. The Aeron size C is a good fit for me although at your height it would probably come under your shoulders. However that doesn't mean it would be uncomfortable. Chairs for extremely tall people are rare although I have a friend who is 6'6 and has a steelcase please V2 which has a tall back

Varies _a lot_ depending on your local market. Here in Finland used Herman Millers and Steelcase chairs _exist,_ but they are nowhere near as plentiful as in the US or UK, and consequently used prices are a lot higher. Hayworth and Knoll, and many other brands are completely unheard of here. It took me two years of listening for deals to find myself a moderate condition Mirra 1 for 250€, and I know that sounds like I got ripped off compared to US/UK prices, but on this market that's a steal - these rarely go under 400€ used (and when they do appear, they're usually gone in literal minutes), often closer to 600€. Still better buy than any Ikea/furniture store/gaming chair I've been using in the past.

Something not mentioned here is that office chairs often have a lot more adjustability than cheap "home office" chairs. At work, my chair looks very simple, but in addition to the standard lift up and down, and back tilt, it also allows the seat to tilt forwards or back, the back rest can be raised or lowered to place the lumbar support in the right position, and the lumbar support can be inflated or deflated.

I've been using my Ikea Markus for about 4 years now. It's incredibly durable considering my use - most chairs don't last longer than 2 years (I'm extremely careless). I don't like the level of comfort, but I know that I'd fuck up a more comfortable chair in under a week (I did that to the backup chair I bought just in case). If you're looking for durability and want something brand new, consider Markus.

Hmm used a Markus for a while and was so thankful I switched to a better office chair. The back is not very flexible and the adjustments overall are lackluster I feel. I've bought used office chairs in the past, and I highly recommend it. Got a Herman Miller Mirra 2 with all the extra features for $100 US and a Steelcase Please 2 for €85. Neither was pristine, but I got each of them on pretty short notice, so if I had a little more time to be picky, I think I could have found something even nicer. The Mirra was my absolute favorite chair, super comfortable, really well made. It did have a little tear in the mesh, but it didn't affect comfort/usability and it didn't worsen at all for the 4 years I had it. The white/light gray parts were a little discolored, but it still looked nice. The Please 2 was also good. The upholstery looked 98% like new, but the gas cylinder could've used a recharge, and the legs had some scratches on them. I didn't realize the armrests were connected to the lumbar, so when you press down on the armrests, the back of the chair pushes into you. Not a huge fan of this, but it's still much better than anything else I could have gotten new for that price.

Ive considered Steelcase but the leap looks like an 80 dollar chair. The arm rests have a lot of play the chair wobbles in the base because the gas cylinder is so skinny theres high force on the mounting components. Does not make the impression like it could last 20 years like some Aerons and be basically good as new.

I’m reading it now and it repeatedly states that the chimp (emotions) is not ‘good’ or ‘bad’, that it can be your best friend or worst enemy. So whilst I agree that there is a heavy emphasis on emotion management I wouldn’t say that the message of the book is that emotions are bad. Also, I think the point of the book is to make applied psychology accessible to everyone. There is a lot of evidence in the field of education about how important metaphors are for communicating complex ideas especially anything medical in a way that makes them easy to grasp. I’d say the author has pretty good credentials and many decades of experience as a psychiatrist and also it’s really significant that he is a psychiatrist who is working outside the medical model.
