I've known (and loved) the Naturally album for many years but until watching your video I hadn't realised there were so many musicians playing on it. I had assumed (wrongly!) that that fab "demo" sound was because it was just JJ Cale doing (nearly) everything. Something new every day...
@christianhlie7 күн бұрын
Well he did work as a producer. And although he's not credited as a producer on the album, i'm sure he had played a big role on the overall sound. It's a great and interesting album in many ways.

Clapton was heavily influenced by J.J. Cale, you can tell from Lay Down Sally and his cover of After Midnight. Along with many others that took from this highly underrated musician. Great lesson, thank you

What about countermelody? Paul's melodic bass, which contrasts with the melody, is a major part of why Something sounds so good.

I believe Eric Clapton wrote 'Something'. Just listen to it carefully and you should hear Clapton's writing style. Did Eric give it George or what I don't know. 'Something's fishy here.

Some people just need to find fault, somewhere, somehow, to make their day complete. How's that working out for you?
@annodeАй бұрын
@@DeutschlandGuy Not at all. My thinking is straight forward based on the music and the history. Musically it sounds to me like Clapton's writing style. Lyrically it sounds like a love song written to Pattie Boyd, Harrison's wife, who Clapton was in love with. Read the lyrics from Clapton's point of view.
@urbangorilla33Ай бұрын
What songs had Clapton written at that point (early 1969) that sound like "Something"?
@annodeАй бұрын
@@urbangorilla33 Good question! I'm actually not a Clapton fan. In fact I think of him as a third rate song writer/performer. But you made me think about what is it that had me feeling he wrote 'Something'. I skipped through all his solo records today up until 'Autumn', and did not find a single song that I could hear any semblance of someone with enough talent who could write 'Something'. As a player and writer, he's a hack...sorry Eric. (besides with Cream.) So what am I hearing in 'Something' that makes me feel he wrote it? I still need to investigate this...get back to you.

Nice video. I learned this song right after I heard it. One important note you left out was there are no overdubs in this song. It is all arpeggios with hammer on and pull offs. I agree that Mark used many folk/country techniques in May 9th. He also has remnants of his bass playing which he did early on with the thumb and finger style of his picking on this particular arrangement where he accents the first note of each chord movement. Very reminiscent of "Travis picking." A beautiful song with its outward simplicity and inner techniques that are challenging to play correctly.
