The rendition is fantastic but to me there are so many tempi and subtempi indications. The whole thing seems just a matter of tempi andf rhythm while overlooking other key parameters such as expression, balances, overall structure and perhaps the most important of them all, tradition. There exists a tradition of how these works must be played that comes from Wagner himself through the conductors he worked with: von Bülow, Richter, Levi, Mottl,. etc. Toscanini ignores all that tradition and performs the works as if Bayreuth had never existed. All in all, it is interesting to see and listen how the old maestro conducted Wagner with an American orchestra in the 1940s. However, the true Wagner is defnitely not here.

I am convinced this is one of the most heartfelt compositions ever to grace the world. And, that it’s an outdoor performance adds to the shimmering renown of this greatly beloved masterpiece. Forever and a day? PWG

The quality of the recording (1940s) is superb!

It is interesting to note that the rhythm played by the solo trumpet at the very beginning in this recording is different from the way people play it nowadays. This recording is correct according to the score; the new way of playing it is incorrect. For a side by side comparison, see the Wikipedia entry for Symphony No. 5 (Mahler).

Jansons was good conductor. But this orchestra could play thus music with high quality themselves. Once in 1982 in Moscow they played Shost.5 (with chief conductor Mravinsky) and the light switched off. They went on playing and finished symphony in darkness by heart.

Can't believe it's been almost 35 years ago. What a perfect choice of "My Homeland" right after the fall of communism and return of the conductor from exile, Rafael Kubelik. 8:33 in sunglasses Czech president Vaclav Havel.
