Great footage and commentary - it looks so tame but even on day 2 those were decent waves!

You did more than the one obligatory gybe downwind. I did one, survived it and didn't want to tempt fate trying another 😀

Great vid Sam, thanks for sharing, your notes throughout explaining what and why you stuff is of enormous value to the likes of mere mortals such as Me. The last race on Sunday I followed you from the start (boat to leeward of you at the gate) and just sailing, watching and learning from you was a Masterclass in itself……next time let me just stay with you to the windward please 😂

I'm still miffed that they canned the other 2 races that day! Perfect sea conditions...perhaps some blue sky would have helped. Anyway, great sailing Sam & a well deserved, additional, national championship!

Great video tight racing, thought I could add my side of the commentary. I only have to stay in front of Sam/Mat to win event so looking to keep a close cover on them. 3.34. i fake luff Alex for water, making him go in tight out wide from the mark given me a clearer lane inside him at the start of the beat. 4.22. Stay on port until Sam tacks, tack with him so I can loose cover 5.27. Short beat, so race to the layline so he has to follow me in, giving him no overtake lane 6.04. Overtaking Alex is not all that helpful as he will cover me on the next run 6.20. Stay on port for a bit to keep clear of Alex knowing I can gybe back if needed 6.38 Sam sails low then gybes in a gust so gybe to match. I’m now between him and mark, leeward boat and on stb so have all the rights. 6.40 Head up slightly to close the gap, it slower but safest play for me here. If I’m close he can’t gybe back at me 6.58. He looks like he might roll me so a sharp luff making sure I hold him outside the mark zone. 7.05. Time the gybe back so he has to follow me in no chance of water or late overlap 7.24 no big gusts coming on the reach so Go low early to make sure the only overtake lane is to windward so I can luff if I need to Shorten course so keep it clean to the finish. Short course racing like this is great for tactical decision making

Great video Sam, thanks for sharing. Gives us lower down the fleet notes on how to improve. On the commentary text, after rounding the windward mark you say: "Powering up the rig", how do you do that? My routine is to pull the mast back up straight, losen of a bit of outhall, let the cunningham/downall off and let some kicker off too!
@RS400_Sam6 ай бұрын
Hi Duncan, that's pretty much it! Rig goes hard upright, Cunningham and outhaul off and kicker eased to about 60-50%

Can I ask what weight you are as a crew? And would you always sail with that much outhaul off in the light?
@RS400_Sam Жыл бұрын
We're probably around 165kg all up at this event. At with the breeze as it was, we're searching for max power without having to worry about stalling the flow through the sails, as there is just enough pressure to maintain it. So yes, we'd keep the outhaul pretty loose.

Looks fun. I am the new owner of number 982, how do you have your spinnaker setup? Mine goes around the back of the boat but I can't see that on yours. Never had a boat with a spinnaker before and none at my club to look at?

Hi Dave! Welcome to the class. Our halyard runs straight from the uphaul block to the downhaul, so it's all contained in the crew area. Ill take a picture when I get a chance

Do you sail with daggerboard partially raised upwind in most conditions?
@RS400_Sam4 жыл бұрын
Anything in medium winds upward I would, in light winds I tend to have it all the way down
@adamcatlow74964 жыл бұрын
why have you got your kicker on so tight. if you let it off the power would be harnessed better through the gybes
