In the anime, there was a very, very, VERY slim chance he could've survived his wounds if they got him to a vet. In the manga, there was no other outcome. He would die of his wounds. They were so severe, no amount of veterinary care would save him. At least he went out like a boss. Like a true soldier, not crying out for help and not giving Hōgen the satisfaction of making him cry. If I remember correctly, Hōgen never forgot about John and John was the first dog in years, maybe ever, to make Hōgen feel fear.
