They still use the F40s and gallery cars? I thought they were all retired

The Holiday Train is the only exception to the Gallery Cars. Otherwise, they are retired from revenue passenger service. The newer, rebuilt F40 variants, the F40PH-2Cs, are still used along with the MP36PH-3Cs and the Bombardier cars on the San Jose-Gilroy portion of the line. The older F40s, the F40PH-2s and -2CATs are all retired.

It's still a regular thing, but there's just so few freight trains on that line now and most run at night usually. The IOANP is one of the only trains you can expect to see in daylight for the most part.

Love seeing these videos but also hate that there are some people who just don't care or pay attention to the Big Boy leaving, Stand back at least 25 feet or so so we don't have another 844 situation. Great video tho

its crazy to me that the crowd of people think they can ignore trespassing. as though the steam engine means trespassing laws no longer exist or that the effect of the train hitting them would be different. where are police in these moments? i just dont understand how people can think that is right.

I think the main issue here was more that people thought the train was doing a whistle stop at Truckee, but due to some unexpected delays up on the pass, they didn’t have time to and weren’t able inform people in a timely manner. But you’re right, even if the train was stopping here, it doesn’t excuse standing in the middle of the crossing as a freight train could come along unexpectedly still.

Awesome catch. This is back when Utah Southern Railroad loaded these up at Comstock Mine and took them down the hill to Iron Springs to hand-off to UP. OISRM to Richmond, CA and OISST to Stockton.

Yeah. Certainly made for a fun catch though. So glad I caught at least one of the F40PHs during my brief visits to the tracks. But I do plan to return soon hopefully for an actual railfan adventure all over the DFW area.

I saw this at Emeryville im from Virginia and when amtrak engines break down we get a lot of these never seen one take a amtrak in virginia yet from ns but I guess I brought some luck when I came to the bay area the crew was great when I saw them the guy that was on your side gave me ✌ sign engineer opend the window to wave to me
