I feel like when letterman asks if he can get him a mint you can ALMOST see Kaufman break character and laugh at the situation.

So funny that he ignores the interview, and then his act is essentially the anecdotes interviews create

I love this from the 80’s back we had amazing talent here is a comedian singing better than most singers today and he is sent a singer! There’s no talent anymore and I have been playing music with my guitar for years and I couldn’t tell you hardly any new “rockstars” more like pop stars! Ain’t nothing rnr about it

No one will see thos hot take, but Andy Kauffman strived in his era because he was a spectactle. You have to look ar him a while before you see where his intentions are in his sketch/role. Its evident hes always doing a bit- he likely lives his life that way, BUT Andy wouldnt br popualr if he had started in the internet era. His work would be too divisive and likely instantly defuse his mass appeall because you could see hik at any time . But back then it was like oh man i hope we spot andy kauffman or oh man we spotted andy kauffman. Either way youre like, "What is he gonna do?". Which is yhe perfect setup for sequence of any emtoion. Tension then laughter, tension then confusion, tension and anger. He was theater alive

You had to go be immersed in this guy and head would keep you going unexpected places. Maybe not the funniest but ridiculously engaging and spunky kauffman is

Please, Kaufman was always a loser. He had a little bit of success as a comedian which is actually dumbfounding because he wasn't funny !!

I was a teenager during these appearances, and I’m ashamed to say I didn’t understand Andy’s humor. EG, when he was on Fridays and that whole sketch turned into a brawl with him walking off the set, I was horrified ! 😂 But I loved him, and I watched Letterman as much as I could. I’ll never forget the last time I saw Andy… he was on Letterman, and he came out and said he loved everyone in the audience, and wanted to hug them. He went out in the audience and hugged a lot of people. And then, not long afterwards-a couple of months?-he was gone. I was naive back then, and reflected back to the hugs he gave out, and thought that he must have known the end was near, and the affection he doled out was genuine. All these years later, I finally get Andy’s humor. I still think those hugs were for real ❤🥹

What's actually funny here, and why did Kaufman have to be funny at all? He always emphasized that he didn't want to be a comedian but an entertainer. What's funny when it's obvious that the man is completely miserable, even if he tells stories that are all untrue? That cough was barely faked. His suffering probably began in 1980. 😢😭
