I studied Nazi Germany for a year when I was 16. The question posed to the 6 of us (studying for the S Level) by our history teacher was "Could it happen here?" At the beginning of the year we said 'No'. After studying the propaganda, the use of fear, the psychological instability from inflation etc we said 'Yes'. Unless we recognise the early signs and stop it. It's not too late yet. That study informed the rest of my life.

This song and "The First Time ever I saw your face" sung by Roberta Flack are the only two songs I have that give me goosebumps. And Jane Voss singing a Carter song "Jim Blake's Message" always makes me cry.

Had to give this a second listen.. where can I find the lyrics (can't make out some words). But I always loved B by the sloop John A. ♬‧*˚✧♬ ✿`·٠•●♡ . Super harmonies!

Sloop John A (Les Barker) Well, we looked for the Sloop John A We searched for it all day ‘Round Nassau town we did roam A man on the pier Said it wasn’t here. We didn’t find it Then we went home Chorus: So where can the John A be? Maybe the A’s at sea We had a good look around Then we went home Then we went home We had to go home We didn’t find it Then we went home Well the first mate he wasn’t there Maybe he was elsewhere Maybe he was on board the Sloop John A Wherever he was We didn’t meet him because We couldn’t find it And then we went home chorus Well the day was a non-event It seems like the A had went Then they told us that there’s another called B B is okay I had my heart set on A But we didn’t find it and then we went home chorus

Brilliant. Still one of my favourite Breton albums - and has been for decades. Kornog at that time were up there with the very best of them, and the arrangement to this song is proof of that. I always thought there's some distinct semblance to the intricate layering of textures found with Planxty in their heyday and I really mean this as a very honest compliment, not backhanded in any way (as in ripping them off). Soïg Siberil's guitar playing (also notably his work with Pennou Skoulm) had a huge impact on my own approach to the guitar (as had fellow Breton guitarist, Gilles Le Bigot of Skolvan and Barzaz fame). Prime time Kornog is a band that will always stay with me.

Hats off to the late Bryan Kelso Crow for introducing me to my favorite band from Scotland. Been a fan for almost 15 years now. And I'm only 29. I'd heard folks praise the longevity of their band. But I'd say it goes further than just the long span of their career, but also to the timeless value their music provides. Really helps me to get through particularly grueling days.

This is by far and away the absolute best version of this song I have ever heard. I've usually heard it sung all slow and dreary like, well like almost everything British where the most optimistic they get is "It could be worse". This version has so much life in it it's just amazing.
@ChrisSmith-xh9wb2 жыл бұрын
This owes a lot to the Young Tradition version from 1965, which was anything but dreary.

THIS WAS INSPIRED BY FEDERICO GARCIA-LORCA'S PLAY OF THE SAME NAME. GARCIA-LORCA WAS ASSASSINATED BY FRANCO'S FASCISTS IN THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR FOR BEING GAY AND A REPUBLICAN. ( IT MEANS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN SPAIN AND IRELAND).

Nothing on the Young Tradition version. Just sounds so wrong in that smooth Yankee voice.
@Mike-mw5zn2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I prefer smoothe American over billy goat, out of harmony Young Tradition. But I guess some people like the rustic things.
