When Kelvin was 14 he devoured Fourier's theory of heat ( which was cutting edge at the time). Lagrange and Poission were critics of Fourier's theory of representing functions as infinite sums of weighted sines and cosines. Fourier's intellectual heritage flowed down the years into still more Frenchmen in the form of wavelets originator, Yves Meyer (Abel Prize winner) and Stephane Mallat (and several other French researchers) as well as Belgian applied mathematician Dame Ingrid Debauchies (they made her a Dame because her brilliant work on wavelets).
