I find it a bit amusing when I hear songs like these, glorifying, praising the pre-Columbian Aztec, Mayan, and Incan empires and not just RATM, but also Neil Young's mid-late 70's naive, ahistorical song "Cortez the Killer" about how supposedly paradiasical, almost utopian "Eden" like central and South America must have been before Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors arrived and frankly, its mostly myth, because the Mayans and Aztecs were brutal, vicious, tyrannical and torturous towards surrounding ethnic indigenious tribes and rival kingdoms, conquering and subduing them, forcibly taking their children and young men away to either be sacrificed on altars, or into slavery. Many were brutally, in humanely tortured through horrific rituals, sometimes even Aztec or Mayan warriors would be allowed to keep the skin of those who were tortured to keep as souvenirs. Ancient Aztecs and Mayans were just as much cultural, political imperialists that RATM screams and rails against in European racism and colonialism, they committed many of the same acts, had similar bigoted beliefs towards their neighbors as their European successors. Historians will tell you one major reason why they fell so easily within a few decades was due to so many conquered, subjugated tribes allying with Spanish/Portuguese soldiers in exchange for their freedom, only to gradually realize they exchanged one bad, cruel overload for one Devil even harder, more instransigent, permanently to defeat, overwhelm, and even understand than they did with the Mayans, Aztecs, or Incans. It wasnt just that Spanish had better, more sophisticated weaponry, technological advances, or even greater resistance to European diseases, so did the Vikings when they landed on Newfoundland in Lanse' aux-Meadows and had their decade-long Vinland settlement. The old Norse were probably more technologically advanced and more-resistant to European diseases 500 years earlier than Columbus, the only difference was Leif Ericson's and other Norse settlers gave up any idea of permanent settlement as unrealistic and due to series of misunderstandings between his settlers and Beothuk tribesmen.

@@davidroberts7282 That is usually how history works my friend. Empires grow, subjugate more people, decay in corruption, and collapse, only to be replaced by something worse. The French Monarchy was replaced by the Terror, the Tzars were replaced by the Bolsheviks, the English Crown was replaced by Cromwell, etc. Authority is a strength, so if a revolution is to survive, it needs to be authoritarian. The purpose of this song is more to praise the Zapatistas, and tie them to Chicanos. From my understanding, the Mayan Empire was rather mysterious, as it grew and died without a lot of recorded evidence, mainly artifacts. The Aztecs and Incas were recorded by the Spanish, the Incas had a theocratic monarchy that collapsed when its monarch collapsed. The Aztecs were more fear driven and collapsed when that fear collapsed. But the purpose of this song isn't to dive into that, just to highlight the struggles of people of native ancestry in Mexico have even today against "vultures that stole your name" or white Mexicans. But mostly to praise the Zapatistas and Native Mexicans.
