I loved (and I still do) biology, but I eneded up doing mathematics. But it was my biology teacher in high school who inspired me to pursue a scientific career. I am really thankful, it's fascinating how a good teacher can change your life

This 100%. Go out of your way to be helpful to other teachers (especially the neighbor) when you can because it’s a two-way street. Some people say teaching is a team profession and while I don’t totally buy that, you definitely don’t have to be alone. Other teachers will also have invaluable intel about students, their behaviors, and motivations as well as co-workers. Even small favors translate into big advantages later.

When I was a kid, we read a book in school. I think it was called “Motive: Fear”, and it was about a boy being bullied, and eventually he finds out that his bully is a victim too, so they end up becoming friends. A great book, but I’m not sure if there’s an English version of it. There is one quote from it that stuck with me, that perfectly sums up what’s wrong with the education system: “My mother doesn’t care about school; about my grades at most”.

Either you can have it - - cheap (so not 1 on 1 private tutoring all the time for all subjects) - good (actually supports lifelong learning) - fast (do it all in a fixed number of years for some reason) Pick 2 at most, its the same for all walks of life

Appreciate what you do. If the dems hadn’t messed up the system we wouldn’t be going over this. The focus of school should be to learn, not inundate with so many activities that their education becomes secondary. Additionally, a finances class, home economics, and basic skills should be mandatory curriculum. So many kids don’t even know how to wash their own clothes.

The role of teaching children starts at home. If you think your child needs Home Ec, Basic skills, and financial literacy courses (and I agree, they do), why aren't you providing that? School should not be the first place kids are exposed to the value of a dollar, how to make basic meals, and how to do laundry. If that's the case, that's a parental failure, not teachers, society, or "Dems." What happened to personal responsibility?
@Pearl7sp15 күн бұрын
as someone who is currently in school, in the three schools i have been enrolled at in the past year, i have not experienced any secondary activity that would be caused by recent democratic policies. the major thing that takes me out of school and learning is the constant assessments and testing and grades. if those stressors werent hanging over my head constantly then i would love school, but i cannot say the same as of now. these issues are inbuilt into the system. what are your thoughts?

I understand your frustration. Education system needs to change, but the thing is there's no simple way to change it. Thank you for loving teaching. Teachers like you are rare. Also, from a like, personal paranoid view, this video reached me, an Indian, so it would be exploding in a few days I guess. If you read this, please make sure you will not be reprimanded in your job for this. If possible take the video down or just post a rant on subreddits.

Not from the US, so I don't understand how class gets interrupted by tests and all that. Can someone explain the American education system and what he's talking about to me. I'd appreciate it.
@adamchivers717716 күн бұрын
I’m not involved in the school system so someone could probably explain it better. But a lot of time the curriculum that a class is supposed to teach, doesn’t align well with standardized tests that are given to schools. These tests impact the funding schools get. So there is a lot of pressure for teachers to fine tune their class to teach students to pass the standardized test. It makes it difficult for teachers to adjust the pace of the class and be responsive to students needs, interests, and ability.

A lot of classes are expected to take tests weekly and they need an entire class period for that so we’re already losing 20% of your time in the classroom for that alone. Then where I’m from you had six 50-minute periods that basically never start on time and all the while you have to go down a massive row of topics that are expected for your school to be funded so you’re basically always cramming. And after all of that a lot of schools simply aren’t allowed to fail students in order to avoid getting their funding slashed so the tests end up having virtually no impact on the students’ actual lives unless their parents pick up the slack Edit: and while I’m ranting even if American education manages to do what its supposed to it usually causes people to tie their self-worth to arbitrary numbers which contributes to extreme levels of depression and anxiety
@andrewcook_15 күн бұрын
@@bgammax5842and this is before we factor in just how bad multiple choice tests are for teaching. Like, there are 3 wrong answers and a right answer. If you can perfect your process of elimination skills, you can pass all classes and learn practically nothing or enough to get by... Which teaches you NOTHING about how the world works. Life isn't a multiple choice test.

I'm sorry for what you're going through. I don't have any personal experience with teaching but I can see why your situation is frustrating. If you can find a better position within education and academia that's less bureaucratic and more rewarding, you should go for it. If there isn't such a possibility within your current field, maybe switch to a field that allows you to pay the bills while also allowing you to pursue your passion of teaching. Good luck and I hope you succeed!
