I stayed all week for the practice runs and the race. Fantastic time. We camped out in the infield at the hairpin. Hearing the cars come down the straight and down gearing into the hairpin was incredible. We could stay in the tent and tell what car and driver was headed our way. Awesome sounds.

@@wilburfinnigan2142 WRONG! Without the development of the Merlin engine and continuing to use the Alison, the Mustang would have fell of the production line! The USA only gave Britain the mustang because it really didn’t meet the USA standards, that is until, the British married the Mustang with the BRITISH built Merlin. I’m pretty sure Royals Royce had a British patten on the engine! Give credit where credit is due! It was teamwork - great airframe 🇺🇸 & great engine!🇬🇧

I attended this race in 70'. Andretti trashed the living hell out of his first car. I was wondering why, with such a big lead, he found it necessary to flog his car to death. Revson was the driving force behind that 908 Porsche. McQueen was slow as a toad. With an equal driver to Revson, that 908 would have been long gone. The 917's served notice on racing, they were the ones to beat when sorted out. Real old hard core racing without one safety interruption. Great memory.

I was there as well; my god what a race! Andretti/Merzario had a 13 lap lead at one point-- largest lead in Sebring history. I too always wondered why they didn't back off and try to bring that awesome #19 Ferrari home into Victory Lane. But Scuderia Ferrari won anyway!

I well remember following this race from home in Colorado on ABC's Wide World of Sports broadcast. We celebrated that breathless victory by Andretti in the 512 he took over from Vacarella to catch Revson and give that marvelous marque what would be their only victory all season. What a wonderful memory! Almost as magical as that in "A Christmas Story" movie. I and more than a dozen of my friends emulated the World Sports Prototype Championship of Makes with our HO scale Thunderjet , AFX and Tyco Ferrari 512s, Porsche 917s, Alfa Romeo 33s, Lola T70s, Cobra Daytona coupes and Ford GTs. We combined all of our tracks to make 4-lane exact copies of each race track that was on the WSPC trail throughout the season. Unlike the real racing, my Ferrari team dominated the year and won the championship cup. 1970 was one of the best seasons of racing from F1 to Sports Prototypes, Can Am, and Trans Am. My group of friends raced our HO cars for each one of these series bar F1. There weren't enough of those special slim F1 thunderjet chassis to go around to all of the guys. We reveled in the real racing and had a blast sliding those HO cars around the amazing 4-lane tracks we built. Fun times! Great memories!

It is said that the checker was waved at Andretti even though he was actually a half lap behind Revson. True or not Revson was an amazing driver. He was part of the family that owned Revlon. I've always been sad that this race was not run by that old Porsche, McQueen's car wasn't even in the same class as the Andretti Ferrari.

Andretti said this was his most favorite win in all of his storied career. McQueen and Revson almost had an upset win in the underpowered Porshe until Andretti came from behind to win in the second Ferrari 512.. This race was right on the edge. Speed and the challenge of danger and the euphoria of the famous pilots. All fascinating motives in life.

@alfadan52 I never had the luck to visit Sebring but it are stories like these and yours that changed the blood in my veins into petrol. It’s really trilling to get a comment from someone who could witness these golden times of motor racing from the front row. I’m really glad to read you have raced Alfa’s. Must have been great fun. Me and my friends are trying to get a 1967 Alfa Giulia GT sprint Veloce back to life.

Best success to you for restoring one of the best sport car of all times. In those races I discovered my love for the Alfa 33 (and generally the Alfas): their smaller engines running and sometimes winning with bigger engined cars like 512, 917, Chaparral and so on

This is the race that made me a fan. I was there and a few years later was racing an Alfa GTV in the SCCA for fun. This is still the best race I have ever seen. Brings back great memories. My friend and me had an 12 hour event of our own just getting there driving all night on Friday from Biloxi, Mississippi in a Fiat 850 spider. I got a ticket on the way back on Sunday for 85 mph in the Fiat. What a weekend.
