The Yama RZ50 was the fastest of all the 50cc bikes in my time... South Africa...80's... I would get to 65mph on the flats.. pretty easy. The good old days! 👍 In those days you could only purchase a 50cc when you are 16, so there were many to race with... I killed them!! 😁

Although it says "Restricted 50cc motorcycles," the speed limit was probably imposed by the foolish British government, which tried to protect British and other European motorcycle manufacturers from Japanese motorcycle manufacturers under the pretext of traffic safety. In Japan, 50cc bikes were much faster and more powerful in the 80s than in the 70s.

What happens when a Born Again Biker meets a Never Stopped Biker like me? Do we cancel each other out? And both cease to exist? I started in February 1975...was a courier for 4 decades (most of it) as I got into my 50's moved into retail and still used my bike for work...now I'm an OAP and still ride despite having recently received my Freedom Pass travel card...I wont stop till i get into my 70's...a video on the history of 125's...i never rode them till i got old..been on Honda Innova 125 's since 2007...I did not have a CZ 125 ..my second bike was the CZ 175...then the CZ 250 3rd bike...then Suzuki GT500..and stayed on Japanese..so many bikes I've ridden..never learnt to drive..so i became an instructor...a Motorcycle Instructor...imagine fitting that into courier work...a Million Kilometres later...still riding

Hi. Interesting point what you talk about , Born again biker meets a long standing biker , I try and answer that, I am in a group of 15 lads who mostly I grew up with , and rode with back in the day, I think few observations on that dynamic. Most of us 50s and 60s , The New to riding members haven't got the history and memories from the past or the knowledge of the old bikes or shared memories, But we are all compatible and bond well! The difference is the New lads recently passed or got involved have different riding styles take less risks, Because there training is up to date , Also they are not trying to relive their youth and risks they took back in the day, They also have no real interest in older machines they have no links to them , Older to the movement lads enjoy more confidence but have more riding faults I feel ( but not all ) It's hard to explain ,lot of factors going on ! I would think I am likely to have alot more in common with you , than you think , shared memories is powerful!! , even if we have never met , Motorcycling is amazing experience, ( obviously has its downsides ) it's very individual thing too , I hope I have answered some your opening question , On another thing my daily ride to work is Honda CG 125 , a grandad machine back in day , my 1980s machine , makes complete sense, I am almost a grandad myself today 😁

monkton...thanks for responding..I am a grandfather..I'm pleased to admit to..all Granddaughters...I have so much retro enthusiasm it's obsession...I love machinery from decades ago... especially bikes...although as I mentioned I ride a Honda fuel injected 125 in my twilight years...keeps me sane...and is about quick enough for my late 60 reactions (slow enough) 50 MPH is plenty for my suburban London pottering about... I fully understand your groups modern approach...little or no connection with historic bikes...and adapted to today's traffic conditions not reliving past experiences...I can hardly stop comparing my youth with today's riding demands...I never owned Superbikes ...my bikes were mostly workhorses for the job...I still had fun in between...I had my racing around in small doses...I've heard of many deaths but never lost anyone close thank God...my own Father was against me starting in 1975... He'll kill himself etc...mum said let him...I fell off regularly...68 times i count...a few nasty ones...but never put off...not for a moment...patch me up...get back on... return to work...there were no bikers before me in my bloodline...I was the first...only influence was my brother in law...who had bikes he never used...despite my poor accident record...I was born to ride...destined to pass advanced rider exam....the Full License was too easy...

Had. Yam Rd 50, air cooled, brilliant bike, bullet proof and so easy to derestrict, got mine to reach 60mph on the flat with just a few carb and gearing mods... The AR 50s were great but never took off, very few still exist. The MB50 was a joke, at the time...just like the puch step though ...nowadays every 80s moped is worth over 1k 😱😱😱

To answer the question posed by the title, definitely killed it. In the heyday of motorcycling (my heyday anyway) in the 1970s every summer weekend the roads were full of bikes. Clubs and bikers' pubs abounded and every city or decently sized town had two or three bike dealers. Now, apart from bikes owned by people aged 40 plus who started riding before all the legislation in parts 1 and 2 you rarely see them. It is just too much hassle. Qualifying and driving a car is so much easier. Plus (maybe a case of rose tinted spectacles) we don't get the summers we had then.

Whoever thought of the 30mph moped law has obviously never ridden themselves. Putting an inexperienced 16 year-old on something with a maximum speed of 30 with huge lorries thundering past at 50 is surely a recipe for disaster. The first thing most buyers did was derestrict it and stuff the law. I don't blame them. Their safety is more important.

One of my mates had a Honda NSR 125 C PLATE. red , white and blue. Had a belly scope on it. Cool bike. Also again my mate had a rd125 lc but he was a paint sprayer. He sprayed it in Malboro colours😂😂 of the time. White body and had the bright orange wheels.a beautiful bike. I nearly bought it. I was just turning 17. But 800 pounds was a bit out of my league back then.😂

My cousin had an RD80LC that had been used in one of the 1980's magazines reviews, I rode it back to back with my Honda CB100N. The RD80LC made my CB100N feel like a Honda SS50 - dog slow. The power delivery from the water cooled LC was so smooth right up to it's 65mph top speed and of course being a 2 stroke it loved being in the power band ALL the time. So much so that on turning 60 and going to buy a rebuilt FS1E DX (the bike I lusted after at 16 in October 1975 but never had) - I went and bought an RD350 YPVS N2, to get back my RD80LC experience * 6 = one of the best decisions I've ever made. I consider myself to be heavily influenced old school from the sect of Ogri believers, 'stuff everything as long a I've got me bike'! Plus a shout out to 'Bloodrunners' = sex on 2 wheels.

Not sure if you also did the 100cc bikes of the 70's and 80's, In 1979 I bought my Honda CB100N (10.5 BHP) for about £400.00 (£2000.00 in today's money) instead of the Honda CB125T which was more like £600.00 but mainly because the insurance was about £20.00 per year compared to £65.00 for the 125. (Still wish I could have found the extra £245.00 and got the twin - which in 1979 still had the full 16BHP and Comstar wheels.) I rode that CB100N for 24K miles before its cam chain snapped after 1 week of dispatching in London! in 2002. I could comfortably ride that CB100N at it's 10,000 red line = 63mph - for hours on the motorway from Durham to Brighton Polytechnic, using only half throttle if I followed a lorry (and still did 100mpg). I can now see you have also done: Honda Motorcycles 1980 United Kingdom which does have the CB100N (and the H100 2 stroke alternative.)

I had a Baja Brown Fizzie and then a Maui Blue AP50B and they were both brilliant in the own ways. Not sure I would own one now, as they would be too challenging to ride safely in modern traffic but never say never and I am still definitely very much in love with my classic bikes from the 70’s & 80’s.

I had one 25 years ago and loved it. Selling that bike is one of my lifes biggest regrets! Mine was the same color as the first pic in the video. People say they were unreliable and dangerous but I dont agree. Mine never siezed or broke down at all, just maintained it normal. Dangerous depends on the driver, I never crashed it and at that young age I was not driving careful at all. It did not consume a lot of fuel on longer tours at legal speeds either like some people say. I think this is probably one of the best allround 2-stroke bikes ever built. I wish I can get one again but now they are rare and expensive, when I bought mine about 1998 it was cheap and noone wanted it.

3:06 I had an MT5 which was the 'off road' version of the MB5. Standard it was the slowest of the restricted peds! I tuned mine up to do about 45mph so it ended up being the fastest ped compared to my mates peds. 40 years later I purchased another MT5, this one was in crates, it was really bad, anyway I know a lot more about 2 smoke engines now so I made it my mission to beat my old 45 mph record. My current ped is doing an easy 55 on the flat, I'm very pleased with it, it looks like its just come off the show room floor, I finished off the engine work by fitting a 6 speed gear cluster from an MTX80, it helps the engine stay in the power band. I have more fun on it than my Triumph Speed Triple 1050!

We in eastern Europe had different bike license laws back then. For that reason we don't had many 125cc bikes. Many 50cc for riding with car license. For the big bike, you can get full bike license at 18 but you are restricted to 350 for the first 2 or 3 years. So, we had a s**t load of up to 350 bikes.. CZ, Jawa, Izh and many 250s too.. Mostly east German and soviet block bikes. The most popular models where: Jawa 175, Jawa 350, Jawa 250, Izh 350 planeta, Izh 350 jupiter, MZ 150 and 250, CZ 350 /almost like a Jawa/ , Balkan 250. From the 50cc bikes, we had Puch Maxi, Sumson S51 and Simson enduro, Balkan 50.The most valued bike of the era was AWO 425 250cc 4 stroke with shaft drive. Similar to BMW R26
