also, how do they select your aircraft and such? do you like request it, do you like sign up in advance or are you just given an aircraft to fly on and go with that for the rest of your naval aviation years? i’ve always hoped to be a fighter pilot in a jet like an F-18 and stuff, so it was a quick question as well

Rank your preferences via a “dream sheet” then the Navy decides.

hey alex! did you take a certain bachelors degree while in college for the ROTC? that’s my plan but i still don’t get the whole gist of it. i don’t know if they do a bunch of stuff or if you choose a degree that’s best.

My dream is to fly the P8 Poseidons for the royal New Zealand airforce. I went to the wanka air show and saw the KC-135 and two F-16s. Next year I’m applying to be a pilot in the airforce

In the mid-to-late 1970's, The Navy was giving-away Pilot and NFO slots, as if they were free candy, in the AOCS/AVROC and AOCS (Pensacola) community. I got a Pilot slot, while in my third year of college and had all of the details signed, sealed and delivered in about two months. It was super-easy! Two months later, I was at Summer Break AOCS (Aviation Officer Candidate School) as an AVROC (Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate). While being recruited, the Officer Recruiters showed me the movie Pressure Point (the old version, that is now on KZbin) as a motivator. At the time, I was a 20 year-old civilian and a 1,200 Commercially-Rated Single and Multi-Engine Pilot and Flight Instructor with CFI, CFII and MEI (which gave me a leg-up). One of the NAVY tests at the time was the SAT (Spatial Apperception Test). It was a booklet of about 36 or so views of a plane in flight with cockpit views and Attitude Views flying up and down the shore and in and out to sea... The test was supposed to be 30 minutes long. Fortunately, I finished the test in about four minutes. They thought I had cheated!! They made me take the test three times! The first time with an E-6 NCO in the room, proctoring. The Second time with an Officer in the room looking over my shoulder. The third time, with an Officer in front of me and one behind me, with eyeballs glued to my test paper. It took about three minutes the third time to get a perfect score. They said that the test had never been done so fast... Oh, well... 1,200 civilian flight hours helped, I guess? I went to AVROC at pensacola for one summer, then went back as an AOC, not AVROC, after graduation. Then, once we all got commissioned and were finished with flight school, they had a RIF (Reduction In Force) for those of us who were USNR (Reserves) and wished to go back to being civilians. Also, Note: If one were to wash-out (Fail) in flight school back then, one was AUTOMATICALLY sent too the fleet as an Unrestricted Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) for four years. The Pilot/NFO commitment in those days, was 4-1/2 years for Pilots and 3-1/2 years for NFOs as I recall. OCS is now in Newport, R.I. and covers ALL service options for officers. The GREAT thing about OCS (Like Alex said) is that an applicant will have a solid promise of a Flight School/Pilot slot before they even engage arriving at OCS. As for where one goes or what they are committed to if they get commissioned, then depart flight school is the big question... and worth checking-out. Having plans for flight school and not passing would be a bummer if one then became something they least expected. Always check the fine print and see what your future looks like if you leave flight school before getting your wings!
