kate Burton, Toby Stephens, Cherry Jones, Robert Sean Leonard, Emily Watson and Helen Hunt? Is that Samuel Jackson? What a production this would have been.

This is more than adequate for a read through. Two of the best actors of their generation.

How old was Toby? Was he just born an amazing actor?

Maggie must be so proud, Toby was born with the gift for acting, it's that simple, his father and mother are award winning actor, however he didn't use her name or his fathers A list credentials he hit the pavement on his own merit, one has to respect that.

@wylib I couldn't agree more, so glad to hear people praising her!! She is one of my favorite actresses. So incredibly talented! I have loved her in so many things, but I do think Poliakoff's movies give her a chance to really show what she can do. I loved "Almost Strangers", but I think "Shooting the Past" may be my favorite collaboration between them. For all the money in Hollywood, every country seems to outshine ours in terms of great storytelling.

@MrGrevy So everything is equal eh ? ha ha ha, ive got the kurosawa version its a good film with a few magic moments with the witch/demon, but there are a number of weaknesses, several crucial scenes are missing, eg his last stand where 'no man of woman born can kill him' and Lady macbeth seems wooden, the main charecters are lacking any personality, totally overshadowed by the equivilant of macbeth. Also the main charcter dies far too quickly and easily. p.s arent you an elitist swine ?

My brother and I were small boys when our father took us to see this in a cavernous, cold, old brick building circa 1950 or '51. It scared the wits out of us and gave my little brother nightmares. We only realized later that it was his expanation and way of apologizing to us: See...This is what I've got to put up with.

@ayansb - thanks for making that connection! I'm so glad to hear some shout-outs for Lindsay Duncan. I think she's a terrific actress and so lovely. If you haven't seen her in "Almost Strangers" ("Perfect Strangers" in the UK), do yourself a favor and rent it - she is fantastic & heart-breaking.

Notice the blonde woman at 0:31? That's Lindsay Duncan, who played the character of Servilia (the mother of Brutus) on HBO's Rome nearly ten years later. It's funny how things all come together isn't it?

there is no "english" accent. RP is the generic accent, but there are so many regional accents that shakesp's characters would have used--his audience would have heard them and assigned character attributes from them. the soldiers in Henry V are specific. sorry, love, but if you are only listening for the accent you are never really hearing the words.

This version rocks! It really brings the horror elements out which so many other versions fail to do. Reminds me of the classic Universal horror movies. Classic!

@jonnyrowden This was performed at the RSC in Stratford upon Avon in 1994. I was lucky enough to see this production - it was sheer perfection :o) The RSC did a video at the time with longer excerpts from several of that season's productions including this one, it should still be around in some form x

IDK If you'll ever see this, but yess that's Samuel Jackson. and The guy on the right, wearing glasses, he's Robert Sean Leonard. He played Neil Perry in dead poets society and Dr Wilson in House MD.

Can't agree with you there sir. The English accent has nothing to do with the English accent of Shakespeare's time. If we can't accept it in another dialect, we can't truly accept Shakespeare.

Its pronounced "Glaams" as in "ahh" not Gla-mis :P I like a few aspects of this version. They take their time with the scene but I'm not sure if the full weight of the deed is there. I guess it is only rehearsal though.
