I guess there's an error here. Finally, you integrate the uncalibrated files...

Yes I had an annotation on that part but it seems that in the KZbin changes since that time it has been subsumed by closed captioning and is no longer visible by default. Sorry for any confusion!

I can't thank you enough for this video. I just started capturing galaxies and was getting frustrated with my processing results. I used data I captured of M51 and followed along and my results were better than I thought I could ever get.

Awesome tutorial that was so easy to follow. Your step by step was paced very well. I used my own image of M51 to follow along and I was very pleased with my first time result. Thanks for helping out us noobs.

In the days of film nothing like this possible. With a few short extra exposures the blown out systs could be instead obtained with nice profiles to replace.

Still use this after first using years ago. I note that in the latest PI updates there is no longer 'noise evaluation' under weights in image integration. The default is now PSF (Point spread function) signal weight. There is also 'SNR estimate' which to me sounds like the closest to evaluate noise.

First tutorial that explained "why" we should do a certain thing or choose a certain value, etc. This really helped a lot, Richard. Thanks! Now I need to get to work building better Flats!

I am not new to astrophotography but I am new to Pixinsight. I already follow your workflow most of the way but I have one question. You say "there's something else I want to show you" and we end up with Intensity Transformations, Histogram Transformations and you have a target called Integration_Clone_DBE. Where do you get that? The tutorial is great, your delivery is pleasant, and you talk TO us and not AT us. I just can't figure that one out. BTW, I was a Psych Major so you can't expect a lot! I currently use Topaz AI which works well but does nothing to the detail your process produces. Thanks a bunch for a great job.

Great tutorial, easy to follow. I think you have a natural gift for teaching and explaining how things work. It probably doesn’t stop there at PixInsight. Just reading down through the many comments, there’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I just wanted to add to what others have said…thank you.

The fact that you describe in detail what each function is and does at each step in the process makes it really helpful for a beginner like myself. A few other videos I have watched have just said click this then click that etc..

This is an excellent tutorial. Props and respect! The one thing I am struggling to understand, even with this great tutorial, is taking into account flats created over multiple nights. As we all know, we seldom capture all subs for SHO or LRGB in one night. How does one process the flats taken over multiple nights with ever changing optical artifacts created from breaking down and re-setting up equipment, more dust donuts, camera not perfectly aligned like the night before, etc...? Do we create master flats for each night and then create a master-master? How does one do this?

I used a program called IRAF, which is used by astronomers to process images. It isn't very intuitive to use unless you're used to command-line programs, but it's free. Unfortunately I don't know the software options if there's an alternative, but as long as you don't choose the brightest or dimmest stars in your image, you can be reasonably sure you're sampling good stars.

This is a really helpful, well-explained tutorial. Thank you for putting this together! I realize it's already almost 6 years old, but it's still very helpful to me as a newcomer to PI. I do have a couple issues with it, however... As noted in other comments, the registration step should be using calibrated light frames, not the original RAW data. ...and... I ended up with a weird final stack, where the red channel was gray; (K) instead of (R). I needed to go back and debayer my Canon .CR2 RAW files with the RGGB pattern (I did this before registration, as some comments elsewhere said to do this at that point), and then I finally got a color final image.
@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes it was a mistake to use the original images and not the calibrated ones. I'm not sure why the same process yields greyscale images for you; my guess would be a difference in RAW import settings: either something custom on one of our ends, or a default option that has been introduced in the time since the video was made. But I'm glad you have a workaround - when in doubt, explore and do your own thing!

Great video on a fairly intensive set of steps. Question: The averaged star in your PSF has many pixels and quite a few of those appear to be set near maximum brightness. My PSF view shows only about 60 pixels and only the center one is at the brighest level. I am wondering why mine turn out this way. Is there a setting for this? Or do you have any suggestion as to why my PSF does not look the same as yours?
@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, it would be helpful to have a picture of your PSF so I can compare and see what's going on. A guess would be that you need to select better and/or more stars to average, or that there's a view setting that's different.

Hi awesomely clear tutorial. Thanks for that. I don't understand why do you align lights that are not preprocessed ? The calibration isn't made on those frames so the final result is not calibrated no ?
