As a long time Pokemon fan who grew up having snap as one of my first games on N64, I would say Pokemon snap is an amazing game, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a Pokemon game (and I love Pokemon games too). It's a photography game, and a really really good one, maybe the best ever?. Good vid guys I enjoyed it. EDIT: I think it's definitely fair to consider this an on rails shooter, I might revise my previous statement to it's "one of the best on rails shooters" from "the best photography game". Ahh I guess it can be both

Fact of the matter is that both of these products respectively are for two different camps. Be it the ModRetro per the traditionalist, or the Analogue for the more progressive. Both are to be appreciated, though personally, I cant help but feel that the Chromatic just exudes a charm and charisma that makes it undeniably superior in the ways that matter most to me. Your preference may differ.

Video output is such a niche feature and it's a shame you have to pay for it with the Chromatic. Take the video output out, up the screen size by 50%, give it an USB-C chargeable lithium battery, and make the Tetris pack-in optional and they could have easily dropped the price to $149.99-$159.99 to directly compete with modded Game Boy Colors.

"If we're misreading the situation entirely" - Yes, you have. The fact that the term 'FPGA' didn't get mentioned once in the discussion highlights it. The Pocket has the ability to load additional FPGA 'cores'. A core is the program that loads into the FPGA chip and runs a nearly accurate simulation of original hardware. Analogue ships it mobile cores, but a growing community has been developing new cores, or porting ones already exisitng in other projects like the Mister. So it's not just a gameboy. You can run anything up to the tail end of the 16 bit era, so NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis, Neo Geo, 2600, intellivision. There's working Amiga and Commodore64 cores, and a ton of classic arcade games that have been ported, like SF2 and TMNT, with more on the way. I'm not running out to get a FOMO aluminum version, but nobody bought an Analogue Pocket thinking they were just getting a bougie Gameboy clone.

Hey! This is Mike from the video. Thank you for the clarification. I was aware of additional FPGA cores, but not to the extent of what is apparently available. Very intriguing stuff. Especially C64 and Amiga which Kelly and I are both big fans of. We recently started working on some small GB homebrew titles and this video is part of a larger conversation we are having about our options for playing on both real hardware and emulation that gives us that form factor. There are multiple videos coming and we are 100% looking for input on the best options. I think for our purposes Analog is more than what we need at the moment, but you make a great case for why I will probably need one in the future.

The game doesn't work on real hardware due to invalid writes to the MBC (memory bank controller at address 0x2000. if you remove those, then the game will run fine on a regular gameboy. The code for the color doesn't set the sprite palettes, so running in gbc mode is a bit broken still. Here is a fixed copy drive.google.com/file/d/1jyjFv4yU1Q2mRC7CRnSkNEFtd1fyhWDB/view?usp=drive_link . Leave me a comment when you've downloaded it, and I'll remove this comment and the link

Mike has tried. The game developer did a GREAT job and coded it from scratch (instead of using GB Studio). Apparently commercially available cartridges can't handle some of what she did. It is not too large, seems the issue resides elsewhere. We will continue to look for options. - Kelly

The biggest downside to the chromatic is it uses disposable batteries like an original Gameboy. Yes thats authentic but not in a good way, nobody wishes to ho back to disposable batteries, especially not at this price. Also the screensize is the same as an original GBC which is tiny.

Agree 100% on the batteries. Also, I just fired up an old GBC and thought the screen was going bad since it was SO dim. Then I remembered that was just the way it was. Fortunately, the little light accessory still worked too, so I could actually see :) - Kelly

Not an oversight. It's designed to JUST be a GB/GBC. GBA would look terrible on this due to the display having the same amount of pixels as an original Gameboy DMG and Gameboy Pocket. 😊

At a certain time in the early 90s in computer stores there appeared more and more PC games and less new Amiga games. People started to think it is better to buy a PC. Also all new interesting games came out in CD Rom. Aditional Hardware for Amiga was much more expensive than for PC.

I understand why, in hindsight, this controller may seem weird compared to others that came out after it. And in some ways it is an odd design (and there are the issues with the sticks wearing out, which is my biggest issue with the design of the controller - though I've been very lucky in that regard overall). But this needs to be looked upon from the view point of when it was made. While the original Playstation came out in 1995, and the N64 came out in 1996.... the initial version of the PS1's dual analog controller did not come out until 1997 (which was later replaced by the dualshock version). So that kind of dual-analog controller was not an existing standard by any means. And it had to be purchased separately. They didn't even start packing the PS1 with that kind of controller until sometime in 1998. I got my PS1 for Christmas in 1997, and it still had the controller with no analog sticks. The point is that there wasn't much of a standard for Nintendo to base their controller on or compare to. So what they came up with was a controller where, in most instances, you are using the Analog stick OR the D-Pad, not both. Even Sega essentially did the same thing with their 3D analog gamepad for the Saturn that they released alongside Nights into Dreams. While the controller is only held one way, there is a switch at the bottom to select between the analog stick OR D-pad.... so both are not used at the same time, even though they are both in reach. While most modern controllers today are fairly comfortable when using the main left analog stick, the d-pad, or both, one or the other still tends to be in the "prime" position. At the time, Nintendo made a controller where, rather than having one being (even slightly) sacrificed over the other, they just made a controller that is held in different ways to put either the d-pad or analog stick in the prime position for most games. As for the criticism of either the L button or Trigger button are out of reach depending on whether you are using the Analog stick or D-Pad, the point of both buttons even being there is so that you have to only use one or the other.... The PS1 controller (regardless of if it is the version with or without analog sticks) has 8 main action buttons... the 4 face buttons on the right of the controller, and the 4 L and R buttons. The Sega Saturn controller also has 8 main action buttons.... 6 face buttons, and the L and R buttons (with L and R being analog triggers on the 3D game pad)... BUT the N64 *technically* has 9.... the 6 face buttons (A, B, and the four C-buttons), L, R, and the Trigger. Now obviously, given the issue of either the L or Trigger button being out of reach in most situations with the N64 controller, typically both won't be used. But that is why they both exist. It still fundamentally gives the player 8 easily accessible action buttons no matter which of the two primary ways the controller is held. So strictly in terms of having 8 accessible action buttons, the N64 is not fundamentally lacking anything that the PS1 and Saturn both have. What layout on prefers (and the smaller size of the C-buttons not withstanding), you aren't losing anything with on the N64 in this regard. So while I'm sure it is otherwise well intended, the criticism of one button or the other being out of reach is fundamentally moot and at least kind of silly in the sense that it is not giving you access to less buttons than the controllers of the competition at the time. As for alternate ways of using the N64 controller(s) aside from what I have described above, while I've never tried it myself (and I'm not much of an FPS fan in general), apparently some games like Turok have some kind of option where the controller is held with the left hand on the D-Pad and right hand on the analog stick, and some people swear by this being a better way to play such games. While probably not as good as dual analog stick options for FPS games that would go on to become the standard, apparently it is a more preferable option for some for games like that compared to other ways of using the controller. Regarding using 2 controllers (using the two analog sticks and triggers) for Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, it has been many years since I tried it, but I actually did play the game a bit that way a few times. I won't say that it is my overall preferred way to play it, but it is fun to try out. It is not even toted as being a main way to control the game, and I think it needs to be unlocked if memory serves. It is intended to kind of simulate how the pods are controlled in the movie by the characters piloting them. I won't go so far as to say the N64 controller is an all time favorite for me, but I do prefer it for games that were designed for it. I got so used to the feel of playing Super Mario 64 with it (specifically the feel of that specific analog stick with the Trigger button under it), that when play Super Mario 64 on other consoles it has been released on since (i.e. the Wii, Wii U, and Switch), in which I use the now common layout of the analog stick with and kind of L button/Trigger, it took some getting used to for me, because it just didn't quite "feel" the same.

Me and all My friends love the N64 controller…we grew up with it, the N64 was/is one of the greatest platforms ever. People who weren’t around during the 90s don’t understand how much of an upgrade the ps1/64/Saturn was for gaming. The only people who hate on it are the kids who weren’t around when it was hot. its an objectively awesome controller. It feels amazing. And the D pad has the L button, it and the Z trigger are interchangeable In the context of the history of these fifth generation consoles , lots of manufacturers other than Nintendo were trying crazy and wacky controller schemes and layouts. It was an experimental design choice for an evolving video game market.

@@tokimo411 I agree I’m probs my overselling it, it just gets annoying that all these people on KZbin hate on it and weren’t around at the time that it was relevant. It’s a high quality controller, and Nintendo has always had pretty high standards for their hardware, while some of the design elements may be misguided, it’s still a great piece of hardware. The analog stick is fundamentally different than modern hall sensors, the button layout was unique but considering the challenges they were facing I’d say that nailed it. but yeah I obviously love the N64, and its controller. My point is really that historical context matters when evaluating and analyzing game hardware from the past. The real tragedy is how generic and streamlined and boring everything is now too.
