The Irish Catholics were subjected to similar laws after the cromwellian wars. These lasted over 200 years. They were called the "penal laws."

99.9999% of what the English did throughout history was absolutely, undoubtedly, morally bankrupt and wrong on so many levels. Banning bagpipes was the 0.0001% time they did the right thing. They might be my heritage, I'm literally in a place named after a bagpipe player, there's a bagpipe 5m from me right now. But I still think banning them was a mercy. They're weapons of psychological warfare and nothing more.

Add persecution of Catholicism, proscription of inheritance rights for Catholics, proscription of education, of places of worship, of access to the professions, and of right to vote or sit in Parliament......and you have the Penal Laws against Ireland. Nuremburg Lite.

Close to the end of the war it is more likely these soldiers took the chance to surrender instead of keep on fighting in a war which was already lost.

It is regarded that the VC is so stintingly awarded, because the amount of brass is limited, it all being drawn from portions of two Russian cannon captured at the seige of Sebastopol during the Crimean War.

What yankee historical nonsense at the beginning. Abe Lincoln and the North inspired by greed and power violated the constitutional rights of the Southern States. They then violated the Constitution by making War on them and in the proses killed approximately 700 thousand people. The North then destroyed the voluntary union of states becoming despotic at home and imperialistic abroad. Deo Vindice.

Ah, @howelltaylor6774, your comment is a fascinating work of historical fiction, rivaling the best dime novels sold by snake oil salesmen. Let’s stroll through this garden of unplucked weeds you’ve laid out, shall we? First, you lament Lincoln and the North for their supposed "greed and power" as though the South seceded to preserve a noble experiment in self-governance. The South, bless its heart, was less interested in constitutional philosophy and more interested in keeping a very specific labor force unpaid. Their own secession documents read like a hymn to human bondage, so if "state rights" were their tune, it was the right to own other people that they sang most loudly. Second, you claim the North violated the Constitution by making war on the South. Fascinating. Tell me, did Fort Sumter just spontaneously combust out of indignation, or was it shelled by Confederates on April 12, 1861? One might think that launching an armed rebellion would count as, oh, I don’t know, a bit of a constitutional faux pas. Lincoln, ever the lawyer, merely dusted off the clause about "insurrections" and got to work. No breach there, just some housekeeping. You then mourn the 700,000 lives lost as though the North alone bears that burden. Yet, it was the Southern leaders who, when faced with compromises, chose cannonballs over conversation. War has a way of costing lives, a point one might think the instigators would have considered before they took up arms in defense of, let’s be frank, their peculiar institution. And this idea that the North became “despotic” and “imperialistic”? My dear @howelltaylor6774, the Union had barely finished stitching itself back together when Reconstruction began-a messy, imperfect attempt to right the wrongs inflicted on millions of enslaved people. If that’s “despotism,” then every charitable act must be tyranny. Finally, your triumphant flourish of Deo Vindice, the Confederate motto. A charming touch, truly, but invoking divine vindication while defending a system that treated human beings as property is like setting fire to your neighbor’s house and calling it God’s will when the fire department arrives. In sum, your comment is a symphony of historical inaccuracy played on a kazoo. If you'd like to revisit the past, I recommend you bring a shovel and dig a little deeper into the facts before you plant another flag atop a hill made of revisionist sand.
