It's strange, but doesn't York's story mirror the Hero's Journey? But, I thought that only applied to fictional heroes, not real ones, though I'm not exactly sure how much of the film is based on fact.

This movie was made closer to the time when all that happened, and in fact, Gary Cooper met Alvin York. I'm sure if they remade the movie it would be a good one but honestly, I kinda like the innocence of the time.

Howard Hawks was a master of tone. They might not be able to reproduce that atmosphere, his style was unique. Now it would be about ultra-esthaetics and efficiency, when it was all about charm and originality. John Huston wrote the screenplay.
