Hey Chris. Year 4 for me. Started investing in mainly US dividend stocks after I paid off all debts and my kid left home. Suddenly there was spare money so I set to learning as much as I could about the markets. Went down a rabbit hole and never came back up. Seeing the portfolio grow is addictive to say the least.

I found this a very interesting listen. A very measured way of looking at the investing game. I started investing in 2019 and it's remarkable in that time how my perception of what I'm trying to achieve and how I am trying to achieve it has changed so many times. I now generally steer clear of individual stock stories just because I get too carried away with them and have finally taken to a boring FTSE100 tracker as my main tool but I can't help myself every now and then! Keep up the good UK focused content, there's not much out there!

Unfortunately the FTSE 100 has not delivered very good gains in the last 10 years. About 1.9% per year on average. I'm getting better returns on my savings account right now. If you want an index fund instead of individual stocks, an S&P 500 tracker would be far more favourable at an average 7-10% return a year.

@@chrischillingworth You are right. The total returns with dividends re-invested do improve the picture a lot - the accumulating ETF I hold has returned 80% in the last 10 years. I'm aware that still lags other markets and I'm looking at a World Developed markets ETF which has nearly 70% exposure in the US

I'm sure you're right, but when investing we're not really investing in the service/product they produce. We're investing in the business itself. Theres many stocks with great products/services that I even use myself. But they'd make a terrible investment choice. If a friend offered to sell you their 'loss-making' chip shop, you wouldn't want to buy it just because you like eating chips. Hope that makes sense.

Fantastic analysis of Vodafone plc, Chris. It's hard to find this quality of analysis of Vodafone plc, which is surprising given what a big beast this company is. Please could you revisit Vodafone plc, given the significant events that have occurred recently? Vodafone plc has a new superstar CEO (Margherita Della Valle) who has done an amazing job of reducing the debt pile by selling off the Italian and Spanish arms. However, the markets are still punishing Vodafone's high debt (still around £30 billion), the most indebted company on the FTSE 100, and the share price continues to tank (now around 68p mid-June 2024). The proposed £15 billion merger of Vodafone UK with Three looks likely to go through, but the CMA is still scrutinising it and no conclusion is expected until October 2024. BT plc is doing its best to scupper the deal, raising "serious competition concerns" with the CMA. Germany remains Vodafone plc's top earner, so if and when the German economy picks up again, this will give a revenue boost to the company. I'm surprised how sluggish Vodafone's performance in Germany has been, and how sluggish the German economy continues to be, given its huge potential as an economic giant. I can't see the share price rising back to 200p until the debt pile has been cut to under £10 billion, and this isn't going to happen any time soon, unless there's a radical sell-off of more parts of the company.

Good content here, this sounds like what I have discovered in the past few years also. I have realised even though your stock may show a loss, if you look at the dividends achieved and even what you have bought with them you are actuallyup more than you think. :) There is allot of hidden profit. In your app you can look at income from each stock in the details section. I track every penny I have put in myself vs total value to keep an eye on real upside as my app still shows negative when I'm not. I have bought companies such as Persimmon where thier stock has been knocked right back in the recent house blip. I picked them up at £12 average knowing the dividends should steadily increase back to 5x what they where at 20p payouts looking at previous blips and dividend cuts. Which means buying 3% yeild today could be 15% yeild down the line. Currently 8.8k profit now after 4 years, 3.6k of that being dividends received. I started the portfolio the same time you did so following your journey too and finding these podcasts helpful 😊

Thank you. It's a lifestyle decision more than anything. Once you've prepped the show, revisited the analysis i'd done, got all the slides made, filmed it, transferred footage into editing, run the editing, uploaded the footage and input everything into KZbin it can take a good 2 days from my week. For no financial return. When I could be working for my clients. It just doesn't make sense any longer. I did 2 Seasons and over 70 episodes across 3 years. so I gave it a good go. Time to move on to new projects/ideas. I appreciate all your support.

Thanks Chris. Loved this and got into 888 at what now appears a great price at around 56p so around 70% gain as of today. Dr Martens (LSE: DOCS) is looking like another good entry point. Would love to see your analysis of them. Seems to be a profitable business with very good profit margin but maybe just oversold due to issues with their distribution centre in the US and general supply chain squeeze hitting profit margins. Currently down 70%.
