While coaching student teachers, I feel it is good to model collaboration. For instance, if a mentor teacher has a conversation with a team teacher or other colleague, it is important for the student teacher to witness the candid conversations between the collaborative teachers. One conversation I had with my teaching partner involved one of her students who was struggling with multiplication of a three-digit number and a two digit number. Together we decided that it was important to continue teaching the concept, but take a few steps back by using lower numbers for example and practice. Although this is a regular strategy that is commonly used, it was a reminder for my partner to go back to that strategy. It was valuable to my student teacher to see that the collaboration was a form of peer coaching.
