Will this box work great in a mid size pick up cabin ?
@RobertJeffersonBased8 күн бұрын
There's not much point in using a bigger mouth (horn) inside a relatively small cabin because you don't need to couple the wave to the air near as much. Regardless, this would be extremely loud in a truck to about 28hz, but it likely wouldn't make as much high bass (55hz+) as you'd expect. It would also likely perform the best (and sound best at driver position) if the mouth (port) and sub were facing upward to the roof with the mouth on the passenger side and no obstructions. If you want an underseat box then this probably isn't the one. It's better to fire a port or resonator into the door area (as long as it doesn't rattle) and use the shape of the cab to couple that acoustic energy to the rest of the vehicle rather than make the box bigger. I used the "Buick Regal Trunk Horn" (or whatever I called it) on my channel In my old extended cab truck and it was fine in there, but that design is a bit more like ported than this one. You'll see the difference if you look at that video. I never tried this one in my truck, but I did try a tapped quarter wave resonator (~horn) and a "Transmission Line" in it which were both extremely loud near their respective tuning. Even though the tapped QW resonator was tuned at 33Hz in an open environment, 28hz was the loudest frequency in the truck due to "cabin gain" and the additional path length of the resonator formed when I had pointed the mouth at the roof. That enclosure was mega big though.

Thank you so much for your detailed response and sharing your expertise! It’s really helpful to understand how the different designs work in different setups. My goal with this project is to create a more mobile setup, where the enclosure would not only perform well inside the vehicle but also project sound efficiently outside of it. Do you think this back-loaded horn design could work for that purpose, or would you recommend another type of enclosure to achieve that goal? Many people have said that a quarter-wave resonator is the way to go.
@RobertJeffersonBased6 күн бұрын
Inside the vehicle the mouth area of this horn doesn't really gain you anything and is unnecessary, but outside the vehicle the mouth area is still quite small for projecting sound so it is somewhat of a compromise I think. If you only have enough room to fit this enclosure, then it would work ok, somewhat better than a ported enclosure as long as you use a good subwoofer with high motor force and a relatively low Qts. Outdoors you would likely notice that the lower the bass goes, the harder it is to hear and the less SPL it has no matter how much it makes an earthquake in the car. I uploaded another design to my channel just yesterday that is better for playing outdoors because it has much more mouth area and is bigger like a PA horn. I think it may be too big for your purpose, but it's better for playing outside than this one. If you don't mind carrying around a big flat piece of plywood then you could use the back loaded design from this video and reflect it off the flat piece of plywood when you're outdoors and it'd give you a bigger effective mouth area, sort of like a tapped horn. I think that could work too

I would recommend smaller wheels I use 12.5 inch electric scooter wheels and the gearing is perfect it will pull off without pedaling. My next build will have a Jack shaft which will make installation of double freewheel easy on tonka bike I cut backwards threads on motor side for backwards freewheel with a hacksaw blade it was difficult but it worked great also the tires for scooter wheels are rated for a bit of speed
@RobertJeffersonBased5 ай бұрын
Using a small wheel would increase the gear ratio with this sort of setup minus the jack shaft thing. I used a 20" wheel before and the ratio was way too long. With a 26" wheel it should be more ok, kind of went over board with this lol
