Water is like 95% oxygen. It's not oxygen which is needed. It's an oxidizer. Molecular oxygen is but not all molecules containing oxygen are.

When I was a kid, other kids, when disappointed about something would say, “oh sugar jets” and kick a rock or yank their hat down a little tighter as they slumped away.

I mixed the rocket fuel the same way you did which was 3 ounces of potassium nitrate to 1 ounce of powdered sugar and it will not light. This is not my first time doing this. My old ratio, which works great is 65 g of potassium nitrate to 35 g of powdered sugar and to make it a little bit more aggressive, you sprinkling about one or 2 g of iron oxide

If you put cane sugar in a blender your making powdered sugar without the cornstarch additive. Should add more umph.

question. Could you mix the ingredients with a small amount of water to make a paste, form and let dry and still have it work?

In the 60s we made rocket motors using sugar and saltpeter cooked int "Carmel candy" and poured into the motor casing to cool. The tricky part was heating it enough to melt, but not ignite, The melting point and ignition temperature were only about 50 degrees apart !

Awesome 👍 I got a rocket kit for my birthday about 20 years ago. My Dad and I made the rocket which consisted of a cardboard tube, some plastic fins, a wooden nose cone and a long stick to launch it. We even coloured it red and black with felt pens to match the fins. It had 3 small rocket motors and some electric matches to set them off. They were quite optimistic that it would fly 3 times, but the first time we set it off the rocket made a satisfying "whoosh" and then proceeded to spin out of control and landed in the woods at the far end of the field never to be seen again. Lol.

I've already tried to make my own fuse in the past, but i think the quality of a fuse is related with its ability to keep going in tiny space (oxygen consumption), if the fire on it goes out just at the entry hole of a firecracker, then bad is the fuse, to make it reliable and resistant to air pressure, i made it like a tube so that it does use the oxygen inside and works like a tiny rocket

Using corned blackpowder for fuse its not a good idea, it burns unstable, too fast and always want to go off. Other fuses are pretty much ok, but i would do some improvements.

GET 5 TIMES THE ENERGY FROM THAT MIX. Water down the sugar/nitrate mix so you can simmer over low heat none stop for like 30 minutes (until it looks like peanut butter ). Remove from heat & either stuff it in tube let it set for days until dry OR let it set until completely dry, then crush to powder, then stuff the powder in the tube. Enough water so you can simmer at least 15 minutes straight at consistent temp. This allows the molecules to have a tighter bond. WATCH OUT, if you test some that's not crushed into a powder, because the chunks will fly like little rockets more than 20 feet, but the direction they go is random. I tested a little pile (the chunks were around half the size of a pea) they were shooting in all directions "dangerous"

Could we use the blender to mix as well? Maybe blend the stump killer first then add the powdered sugar and blend for another couple or few seconds?

50 years ago when I played with home made fireworks I made my own fuse. I slowed the burning rate of the blackpowder meal I made by mixing corn starch with it. I was trying to approximate dynamite fuse and through experimenting I managed to do that. I put it in a paper core and coated that with asphalt I dug out of the road in front of our house in hot weather and wrapped a layer of cloth around that, the lacquered that. It burned under water ok. I had a lot of accidents, burns, but never had serious injury. I was just lucky some of the time.

The gun powder formula is potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur Charcoal is everywhere at every utility store Potassium nitrate can be bought as "stump remover" Sulfur can be either homemade or bought To make it you will need a shit ton of matches and match boxes 1. Take the match heads and shave off the top not the wood just the top 2. Take the striker part of the match box and shave it down to a powder 3. Once you have them both in a powder grind them up even further and mix them together Have fun 😜
