Thank you to those who put this rarely remembered archival and oral history together. First flown in 1957 with airline deliveries beginning in 1959 the Lockheed L-188 Electra was the only Propeller-Turbine powered aircraft ever built by an American manufacturer. Able to hold 100 passengers (high-density) and cruise at nearly 400 mph, the Electra was also one of the world's fastest propeller-turbine aircraft following only the Russian-built Tupolev-114. Unfortunately, the transition from piston-powered aircraft o the faster turbine powered aircraft was not easy for some pilots. Very soon after it's delivery an American Airlines Electra flew into the East River on a night-time approach to LaGuardia airport in NYC. That was found to be pilot error in reading a new type of altimeter. Then in the fall of 1959 a Braniff Airways Electra came apart over Buffalo, Texas. That investigation was still ongoing when the Northwest crash occured under strangely similar circumstances March 17, 1960. The aircraft had been carrying bundles of rags in the rear cargo section, for the Northwest maintenance shop in Miami and as the fuselage compressed they were all flung up into the air, landing on tree-limbs as they fell to the ground. This was pretty un-nerving for the first investigators on the scene, however, it was not nearly as un-nerving as the fact that no bodies were ever found intact, most had been liquified in the violent impact of the fuselage into the ground. Even seasoned investigators had never experienced anything like it up to that time. After an unprecedented investigation the culprit was found to be "Whirl-Mode". A hard landing or heavy turbulence weakened the propeller/engine support structure allowing for a form of flutter, propeller auto-procession which when it reached the same frequency of the wing caused the wing to snap from undampened flutter. Thus the jagged edges where the wing failed. Examination of the engine nacelles showed evidence that the whole propeller/gearbox assembly had been wobbling and rubbing inside the nacelles. This was, in the end, a math error, in the days (mid-1950's) when there were no computers to design aircraft. Lockheed tended to build cutting-edge aircraft and their aircraft were know for their superior speed. Therefore Lockheed had a history of flutter issues long before the L-188 Electra was designed. The L-14 of the 1930's and the P-36 "Lightning" of WWII both had tail-flutter issues due to their high operating speeds. To it's credit, Lockheed set-up a modification line and the LEAP programe was all finished by the end of 1961 with all new or in-service aircraft modified. The L-188 Electras went on to have a very lengthy career of service both as passenger and freighter aircraft. Only the two (Braniff and Northwest) accidents were attributed to a design failure. ALL other Electras lost in service were either pilot-error or maintenance-error. Both Eastern Air lines here in the US and Varig of Brazil operated Electras on their "air-shuttle services. Eastern was loathe to retire them even as late as 1977 and Varig operated theirs until 1992! Many Electras ended their days hauling cargo in underdeveloped areas around the world, and the aircraft had an ability to operate in extremes of climate, and some can still be seen operating in Canada, to this day. A specialized (submarine hunter) variant of the Electra, the Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft was built by the hundreds and sill serve in many militaries to this day. NOAA National Weather Services operates "hurricane-Hunter" variants as well. The timing of the Electra and other propeller-turbine powered designs of the 1950's was too late for many of these aircraft to see large numbers of aircraft produced.( Only 170 Electras were built). The arrival of true "pure-Jet" aircraft from 1958 forward, sealed the fate of non-jet commercial aircraft for decades. Thus, just like the piston-powered aircraft before them, the propeller-turbine fleets began to dwindle by the late 1960's and for the most part completely disappeared by the end of the 1970's. An era had passed.

I totally agree with this guy.This great hobby teaches math,engineering,science and mechanical and electronic technology.I have Loved this hobby since I was 2 years old and still love it today at 58 years old.Im am currently a private pilot and A&P mechanic.I don't know my life without a model airplane in it.I can't live without them.

Another good resource is the mindfulness workbook "30 Days to Overcome Suicidal Thoughts" by Harper Daniels which destigmatizes the thoughts. So many people have those thoughts and then are eaten up by shame and guilt.
