When Sir George (or "Doctor", as he was generally known, for his knighthood was late in coming) presided over the music in the Temple Church, "The Choral Psalter" which he had compiled was used. The chant can be found therein. As is so often the case however, new brooms sweep clean, and I don't believe his Choral Psalter is used there now. But it will still be in existence and there will be copies around. I have one myself

@ Ah cool thanks! I actually found an old website that has these scores, but every time I put up the URL, the comment got taken down.

Beautiful! We sang this a lot at church. It reminds me of my departed parents as I like to think they are still looking out for me even though they are no longer here.

Ye watchers and ye holy ones, Bright seraphs, cherubim, and thrones, Raise the glad strain, Alleluia! Cry out, dominions, princedoms, powers, Virtues, archangels, angels' choirs: Refrain: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! O higher than the cherubim, More glorious than the seraphim, Sing His praises, Alleluia! Thou art the King, th'eternal Word, Most gracious, magnify the Lord: (Refrain) For all, ye souls in endless rest, Ye patriarchs and prophets blest, Alleluia! Alleluia! Ye holy twelve, ye martyrs strong, All saints triumphant, we raise the song: (Refrain) O friends, in gladness let us sing, Supernal anthems echoing, Alleluia! Alleluia! To God the Father, God the Son, The Blessèd God, the Holy One: (Refrain)

Your lady soloist has the sweetest voice perfectly complimented by the mens solo voices. Excellent singing throughout. I have sung this many times whilst at Leeds Parish Church (1963-1971. 1968 - 1971 Head Chorister) Sincerely, Robert.

As a sop I used to sing this as a treble and I still do and I do the second sop just for this piece, no other piece 😅

Thank you so much for this upload, with the score. It has aided my work in several ways. I loved the rousing rendition of this stunning work. The second soprano part is quite tricky in places, as I recall from my treble days!

That's one of my favourite hymn tunes and harmonisations...Rustington not Abbots Leigh (although Abbots is good too). Rustington is a good setting for Lord you give the great comission. I wish Parry's Rustington was better known, it's not widely used but the rising sequence in the middle with suspensions and resoloutions underneath the rising figure is glorious...

What a fantastic hymn. I remember those harmonies fondly from when I was a chorister so long ago. It sadly reminds me how much we have lost 😢

After viewing the funeral of her Majesty last September (at which this hymn was sung) my wife and I looked at each other simultaneously and decided that we'd have the congregation sing this at our respective funerals. Spectacular text set to a always-moving tune.
