Ist zweiffellos der Kongo. 100% Todesrate. Wenn einmal diese Wassermassen gesehen hast, die wie ein See aussehen, statt nem Fluß und dabei so turbulent sind, als wäre dort ein Hurrikan am Wüten. Dann weisste Bescheid.

The Mount of Blencathra, nest Threlkeld, means Seat of Arthur. Is that Camelot, too?

Again, as a local, I can confirm that this stretch of river is lethal. It has been measured by sonar as being at least 60 m deep just after the waterfall and still about 25 m deep much further down. The currents about 2 m below the surface are so powerful they drag you down. The river has gouged out so much of the rock that the banks that you stand on are all overhangs. Furthermore the water churns so much over the waterfall that it is full of air bubbles. This means buoyancy in the water is dramatically reduced. Basically, if you go in you are not coming out alive. The real danger, I guess, is when the river is not in flood it looks so placid on the surface.

It amazes how deep the potholes by the river are- to be so deep when they are dry most of the year. Also surprised by the lack of visitors, even in winter it is popular with the hardy rambler. Long ago I saw a teen jump over, but it was from the higher side when the rocks were dry. Trivia. There is a second strid on the river, a mile or so above Grassington Bridge called Ghaistrill's Strid. It cuts through Limestone so is wider.

You forgot to mention that Robert III, the dad of the "Wolf" responded to his son's rampage with a timid little, "Please be a good boy, son" message. The Bishop of Dunkeld was so disgusted that he threatened to organise an international crusade against Alexander "Wolf of Badenoch". - he was already excommunicated for dumping his wife and living with one of his mistresses. Alexander paid for the repair of all the damage done to the likes of Banff and Elgin, after walking barefoot from Lochindorb to Dunkeld. But he didn't dump his mistress! You can see his fine tomb in Dunkeld Cathedral....

I was below the strid and looking up saw two young boys in an inflatable dingy go over it. I climbed down to the edge. Luckily for them and me they popped up in the water and came to the edge. I reached down and pulled them out by one arm but they could have climbed out themselves. I looked around for their Parents but again they were lucky they weren't there.

Instinctively, you know there is something 'wrong' when you look down into that black water. Evidently, by the waterfall it's 200+ feet deep - that's deeper than the upstream river is as wide. Also, any poor unfortunate who fell in by the waterfall would sink like a stone due to the water having almost zero buoyancy. Certain death.

@eastwoodsadventures3 ай бұрын
With those window's it does look a bit like a warehouse where goods would be lowered out of them. Old maps only show the farm, with the census giving the occupants of the farm so can only go off that. There are more remains around the building of the rest of the farm but not much to see. Thanks for watching

That arch at the south end suggested, to my thinking, that the ground at that entrance used to be a good bit lower. It was a beautiful day when I visited a year ago. Couldn't go to the UK without a stay in my family's namesake town. Frustrating that so much of the castle was dismantled for other uses of the stone. So much of what remains is difficult to imagine now. Thanks for this overview.

Thanks for watching Andrew. You did well to get a beautiful day in England 😆 🌧 🌦 🌂 I guess the moat would be a lot deeper as well if it was dug out to its original level. Many buildings in the UK are built with scavenged parts of Castles and Abbeys etc. Thanks for watching and dropping in a comment
