My 2 pit mix dogs live and sleep indoors but want to hunt and pull like a freight train on the leash. We have turtles and rabbits on 5 acres, and neighbors have horses, ducks, chickens, other neighbors have small pugs (16) I'm in Florida and want to know how to "un-train" the dogs to hunt when we go out. I've ended up driving them out a couple miles to a desolate road and walk them there, random locations. Appreciate any advice - - BTW running these 2 dogs has cured my gout !!

I wish I had an easy fix for this one. I have the same issue with my pitbull mix, Jack. He has an insane amount of prey drive that he directs to rabbits and squirrels. I used to think that any dog behavior can be changed, but Jack is making me rethink that view. This prey drive is a pretty big part of who he is and he is not going to let it go easily. He is getting better around squirrels, but with rabbits he goes crazy!
@JaimieScott

I still believe that it is possible to change ANY dog behavior, in theory. To change this behavior I would have to find some other outlet for this prey drive that Jack would really get into before trying to extinguish this rabbit chasing behavior. Maybe something like flyball or the like. It would be a lot of work!

@@JaimieScott I encouraged "hunting" lizards when the 2 were puppies, and being born October 2019 these were "COVID" puppies - - unable to socialize from 3 months to about a year.. People walking dogs would turn around or cross the street. Family didn't visit as much. They don't chase frisbees or balls. "All aggression is fear-based"? That is a terrible generalization. I am working for over 20 years with dogs and had my fair share of leash reactivity and aggression. Some dogs simply like to fight like some humans like to fight MMA. There is zero fear in those dogs.

Do you think that even if the dog stops chasing the cat, the cat will learn to trust the dog or has the trust been permanently broken from the chasing? My cats are currently terrified of our new dog because she chases them every time she sees them. I’m disappointed because the lady we got the dog from said the dog was fine with her cat.

Yes indeed it is " a pretty impressive following" that someone who has literally never EVER had someone hire him to train their dog. He has no training facility. He has never given a dog training class or seminar (because he needs a script!). He has never done an interview with other (actual) dog trainers. Honestly I don't know how he sleeps at night. Dog daddy and Cesar Milan and so many other good actual dog trainers earned their following. ZG has and always will be (since his job at petsmart) just a spokesperson for the biggest names in the pet product industry. The worst part is that people actually watch him and since he never shows any real solutions, they relinquish their dogs. He is the most unethical shameless unscrupulous tool in the industry. If we are going to ban any tools lets start with the one causing the most harm, ZG!

@@k9psychologist I may not be stating my position clearly, but this seems like just a semantic difference. I agree that there are many factors that can influence aggression in dogs. But I also stand by my claim that all aggression has a basis in fear. I guess I am saying that fear is always the underlying emotional component when a dog exhibits aggression. That can absolutely be influenced by genetics, conditioning, etc.

Unsubscribed after watching this. Prong collars are cruel, painful and distressing.
@JaimieScott
@JaimieScott 29 күн бұрын
Sorry to hear that. It's seldom the tool you choose, but rather how you use it that matters. In my experience prong collars save many dogs and owners from injury and they can absolutely be used in way that NEVER causes any distress or is the least bit cruel. I would NEVER do anything that could possibly hurt a dog. By NOT being open to using prong collars properly many dog owners cannot say the same as they put their dogs' safety at risk every time they walk. Best of luck to you.

Thank you! I have done exactly that with my reactive dogs. I don’t exactly yell but do the loud sit with the head halter so this was super insightful. To be fair I do that if the dogs suddenly react because they don’t always do this, and if we’re walking I just keep walking and they’ll typically corrects themselves within a few steps. You made me aware of it so I’ll change that. But they’re anatolians.good dogs, great with kids, don’t like surprises and will recognize anyone they’ve ever noticed too close to the property and never stop thinking the stranger danger intruder is worthy of keeping a focus on. Oddly my dogs are super friendly, we invested in training, walk twice each day, and do well in dog playgroups. But on the leash can be unpredictable so I actually avoid park trails and busy times.

Its funny because regardless of the fact that he has millions of subscribers, I have yet to see ZG train a single dog, of any kind, that he did not own (and those ones are pretty messed up). He has no training facility and has literally never even attempted to train a real dog of any kind. I agree sir. DD is the bomb, and he doesn't need to be perfect, or right all the time. I like how he talks about training the owners, along with, and even more than the dogs. It's almost as if DD helps these dogs 'renegotiate' their traumas. Yes, those healings can be quick. Not always, but entirely possible. Humans have a lot to learn from how animals have the ability to come out of their traumas and pasts. I think people are jealous of him. Thanks for being an advocate for him. A lot seem to be against him. I am pro DD. Be well sir.

Also the price of dog food has exploded. A 25 pound bag for $50 use to be expensive. Now a poor quality kibble is $75 for 25lbs. I spend at least $100 for a quality bag (on sale) and it isn’t easy to find. I see my dog as a part of the family so no big deal but a young family with kids and the expenses associated might struggle to be able to buy two bags a month like I do.

My wonderful Lab was dam near impossible to walk on a flat collar. The very first time I walked him on a properly fitted prong collar he was a different dog. Learned obedience, loose lead walk with it perfectly. Month in tested and tried without prong and HE KNEW! Instantly reverted. 18 months later I walk him without lead as his reward is a 90 minute romp i the bush. A bit of effort and attention to detail paid off and the prong collar was a big part of it.

Whilst they’re definitely not as biddable as some other breeds, huskies most certainly are traditionally bred/trained to listen to their owners. Just for pulling alone they must understand commands such as go, stop, turn left, turn right and move on by, etc. They’re notorious for being difficult to train in comparison to some other breeds, but not impossible, and in the right hands they can be very trainable dogs. I have two and they are the most intelligent, hard working dogs I’ve ever met. I’m biased of course but you get the idea 😂 definitely not a dog for the beginner owner.
