I tried using that type of weather stripping on my French doors and it was too thick and the doors would not close together.

Hi! Thank you for the video! Can I ask you what weather stripping did you use for the bottom of the door and where you can buy it?

As this video started, I said to myself, "You guys (home DIY channels) are the unsung heroes of KZbin," lol. I used DIY channels to teach me how to disconnect my washer in prep for the new one that arrived yesterday, and now, I'm shivering in my house because of the draft from my patio, lol! My doors slide open, so they're not the same, but maybe I can put some weatherstripping in the space between the two doors (I very rarely go on the patio, so it's fine if it prevents the door from opening).

My weatherstrips appear to be screwed in. Is the process much different? Are only more recently manufactured doors made with that slot that you press the stripping into?

I spent a few hours and finally figured out how to align the doors properly. Now the center strip contacts the right door from top to bottom. That’s a great step forward. Right now the center bottom still has a hole. I wonder if yours has a hole there too?
@dirtyclothesdad6343
@dirtyclothesdad6343 3 жыл бұрын
Well done! Yeah, mine has the same thing where the center strip doesn't quite go all the way to the threshold, so there's that small gap at the very bottom that doesn't seal. That's okay.

Thank you for the video. I have the same door as yours. My problem is that the right door is a little sagging, so when closed, the lower left corner of the right door does not contact the weather stripping, and there is a gap and wind blows in. Could you give me some advice regarding how I should fix that?
@dirtyclothesdad6343
@dirtyclothesdad6343 3 жыл бұрын
I can offer two suggestions. First, a sagging door is often a sign that some of the hinge screws have loosened. If that is the case, you can easily improve the situation by simply snugging up the screws holding the hinges. Second, you may also be experiencing a slight warping of the door. I saw this also with my door, where the top of the door was in contact with the weather stripping on the center bar, which is attached to the fixed side, but the bottom of the door was pulled away a couple of centimeters, leaving room for the wind to blow through. To address this, I adjusted the location of the hole in the threshold to pull the bottom of the fixed door slightly inward. A little tricky to do because you have to fill in the old hole before you can drill the new one. I used a short length of dowel the right diameter to fit snugly in the old hole, putting wood glue in the hole and then tapping the dowel in place with a hammer. After letting the glue dry for a day, I was able to drill a new hole slightly offset from the original to close the gap and bring my door fully into contact with the center weatherstrip from top to bottom. If you can solve the problem with a minor adjustment like that, it is sure a lot cheaper than replacing the door/frame.

@@dirtyclothesdad6343 thank you! I think there could be some loose screws because when the door is closed, I can see the bottom hinge closing tightly but the top hinge has a little 1/4 inch gap. But I don’t have any idea how to adjust that because I don’t see any loose screws.

not trying to be the smart ass here bc ive learned alot from this video but instead of wasting 5-8 mins taking a measuring tape and measuring each piece pf weather strip couldn't you just put it on the door and cut the excess off? i figured maybe you're just doing that for video purposes in case somebody isnt as handy as we are. im getting ready to do my metal glass panel french doors from 1992. im pretty sure this is the first update to them lol
@dirtyclothesdad6343
@dirtyclothesdad6343 4 жыл бұрын
You certainly can do that, but you'll have to fudge a bit to cut the part of it that is inserted into the channel on your door.
